Review

"Great book for any level! Straight to the point with excellent explanation. Questions start you off in beginner level and get more challenging towards the end. I was hoping for more after I reached the end. Her approach gets you started at the very start without any nonsense. I highly recommend this book and should be on every data analyst's shelf (beginner to advanced levels)."- Arnold (verified purchase)"A fantastic book for those who want to get real hands-on experience with SQL. As the book suggests, you can only learn so much by viewing tutorials - actually grasping the concepts can only be done by doing problems. I wish there were more books like this! Sylvia, please make others like this!"- Aagosh (verified purchase)"Got this book for more practical examples to apply SQL in the real world, and this book is amazing! It guides you through very easy examples and gradually challenges you to auto study to solve more challenging problems. I will highly recommend this book to people that are starting in SQL or looking to apply SQL in more realistic day-to-day business problems. Response from the author on questions or comments is really fast too!"- P.N. (verified purchase)"This was an incredible book. It taught me some new things about CTE's towards the end of the book which are very helpful. It also gave me a fresh set of practice problems to work on to sharpen my SQL Skills. I'd totally recommend this book."- Mark (verified purchase)"This is one of the top few computer books that I have ever read (and I've read hundreds)! It has been a pleasure to work with and work through (actually, I've only done the first 31 problems so far). The problems are carefully thought out, and clearly expressed. I couldn't be more pleased with this book!"- J.C. (verified purchase)

Background: I have a basic understanding of SQL b4 reading this book (aka I knew some SQL keywords like SELECT, FROM, INSERT, DELETE, CASE... although I never wrote SQL scripts myself). I'm fairly good at programming in Java and have dabbled in python, js, linux command line/bash, selenium, cucumber and android. I consider myself intermediate in CSy stuff / programming / software engineering.Intermediate: If you are intermediate, I suspect you can complete this book in 16hrs (one weekend, 8hrs each day). I'd highly recommend not looking at the hints or solutions at all until you've solved the problem. Instead, effectively search for a solution online if you do not know how to complete the specified problem.Beginner: On the other hand, if you are a beginner to CS things in general, this book will take much longer (and be marginally more beneficial). I'd recommend reading the problems, hints and solutions and make sense of them, write notes, look up functions etc over one weekend (estimating 8hrs each day) and then take a week off. During the week off, read wiki articles about SQL, different versions of SQL, relational database theory etc. Return to this book and set a goal of 5 problems daily devoting maybe 1 hr daily for those 12 days and this time do not look at hints/solutions until after you've got a working solution yourself (use the internet to search for solutions).

I've been a DBA for over 15 years and have written a lot of T-SQL code, but this book was a great refresher and introduced some new practices, query ideas I had never thought about before. This is a great book for sharpening your T-SQL querying skills and helping you to gauge your skills -- useful for interview prep and other. I think this book would be useful for both beginners and advanced users.

Great book on tweaking those pesky tricky SQL skills. I have been working with SQL Server since v6.5 and have finally decided to take the plunge and get a certification. Battled with whether to go for 70-761 or 70-461 and decided to go for the 46x series since many SQL shops in my area have NOT taken the 2016 plunge and many are running 2012 or 2012 R2 (2014). Sylvia's practice problems are a definite help to getting those brain cells going to T-SQL mode to help perfect my query skills.

I bought this book along with a similar book on SQL Queries. This book is very good for developers that are new to SQL and want to practice with real world problems. The big difference that I liked between the two books is that this one provided an "expected results" section for each question.I recommended it to a guy in my company that wants to learn SQL.

The book is well laid out and flows through concepts in an intelligent manner. Many important methods for using SQL are presented. The format for working through the problems is good, with hints available in the question area as well as similar concept sample queries.Having a pretty decent knowledge of SQL prior to purchasing the book, I wasn't sure what benefit it would provide. I found the book to be an excellent refresher for me and it was such a well thought out review that I purchased a second book to send to my nephew who was a beginning to learn SQL programming to give him a basic understanding of the concepts.

I think this is a great book. I have had a hard time getting the database to load but I think that is my own fault and lack of computer knowledge. I reached out for help and I got a quick and kind response. I'm still trying to figure out how to get the databas and have a friend coming to help me out laterUpdate: I had my friend help me with my computer and it was an admin issue on my pc. I got it fixed and made my way through the book quickly. Better than leaning on code cademy I think.

I bought this book as a supplement to the database design/sql course I'm teaching this Spring. Due to the nature of the classroom, not all students bring their own laptops to class and of those that do, half are Macs. I needed to teach this in a format that all students could use, so I requested a MySQL version of the create database scripts. The author answered with a script within about 15 minutes of my request, so as far as response from the author, it was great! I've only skimmed the book so far, but I believe it will be a great way to introduce students to SQL and lead them to more advanced problems, hopefully getting them to think it through

Great little book! I purchased it as a refresher because I have been doing nothing but C# and Linq for quite a while so my brain wasn't thinking in SQL. The supplemental .pdf is a very nice touch as well as the custom version of Northwind. Bring on volume 2... I'd like to see an additional 57 advanced brain teasers using Adventureworks2016 or the new WorldWideImporters.
