About the Author

Catriona McHardy has spent her life studying human sexuality and formally held a career promoting healthy expressions of sexuality, individually and culturally. In 32 years at Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, she rose from health care associate to longtime Vice President for Education and Training. She led a team of "sexperts" who provided sexuality education and training to professionals, teens, and parents regionally, nationally, and internationally, including Uganda and Russia. Catriona is a consultant and trainer on issues pertaining to sexual expression and sex positive culture, and a faculty member at Community College of Vermont, where she teaches courses in communication, race, ethnicity, class and gender, and human sexuality. She has served as national co-chair of the Association of Planned Parenthood Leaders in Education and has won the PPFA's Award as Director of the Year. Catriona was named as the first Distinguished Alumni Award from the Vermont State College Hall of Fame. She was a longstanding board member of the Women's Crisis Center in Brattleboro Vermont and Outright Vermont.

I greatly appreciate the diversity in the book, which includes authors of a variety of genders and backgrounds, and the common myths it debunks through story. Huge kudos to the authors and editors, for this book has the potential to help countless.

This compassionate book was created to help survivors of sexual trauma enjoy life as whole human beings. I gave to the crowd funding campaign to support this project and received as a premium the audiobook version performed by Tavia Gilbert, who also performed a novel I wrote. I knew Tavia's reading would be heartfelt and emotional, and it is. The book contains powerful chapter essays written by women and men who have been sexually traumatized, who recount the hard process of reclaiming their own lives. Many of these essayists have become sex therapists and counselors and are helping others who have been exploited and defiled. "Making Out Like a Virgin..." contains hope and inspiration for those on the journey toward wholeness, and helpful insights for those who want to better love and care for them.

I listened to the audiobook version of this-- beautifully rendered, true to the heart, funny and deeply moving, this collection of stories around sexual trauma and healing is a gift to the soul. This review may not be popular, but it is honest. I was disappointed and underwhelmed overall with this book. I have taught elementary school for over 20 years and am passionate about what I do, and I'm always looking for new ideas to mix things up, and when I caught wind of this book I thought, why not? So many positive reviews, let's give it a shot. First of all, I would love for any of my kids to be in Dave's class, he is obviously a passionate and creative teacher! However, I felt like this book spent way too much time on generalities and not enough on specifics, and it really reads like a self-help book for fragile and discouraged teachers. Plus, much of his advice is pretty obvious--you should be passionate? Of course. You should have rapport with your students? Isn't that obvious? You should be enthusiastic? I HOPE SO!His middle section on "hooks" WAS interesting and there were a few things I had not thought of much before, so I will probably use a few ideas from there. But the first section and the third section of the book contains too much "fluff." I believe the book could have been much better with those sections shortened and the middle section expanded (some hooks have no examples given at all, and others have some examples but they are not as specific as they could be to truly illustrate the identified "hook"). In other words, some interesting theory, but let's hear more about how it was truly applied. Perhaps part one was so long because otherwise the book would have been too short? While I was reading I kept thinking to myself, "Okay, okay, where is the meat?" THE PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS DON'T ARRIVE IN THE BOOK UNTIL OVER HALFWAY THROUGH! You may find yourself, as I did, thinking, "Okay, any minute now I'm going to get a great example of his methods. Any page now. Surely it will be in a few more pages. . . "I think it would have been great if Dave would have collaborated with an elementary school teacher who could have given a perspective of how some of the hooks could work in primary and intermediate grades. Or at least he ought to expand on his specific examples, or give multiple examples. It's often easy to explain how a particular hook could work in ONE case, how about a few others? While you can certainly adapt Dave's hooks from his high school social studies classes to elementary classes, the book would be stronger with that additional perspective.If you are a teacher who has a hard time getting motivated for your school year, then maybe the first and third sections will pump you up. But if you are excited about your school year and are just looking for some fresh ideas, only about a third of this short book is "meat," and while portions are tasty, THE BOOK IS OVERPRICED FOR THE CONTENT YOU GET. If I could get a second edition with an expanded part two and a much more abbreviated part one and three, I would give this book a second shot.

I, like many others, bought this book based on word of mouth and positive reviews. The book is written as a motivational speech. Multiple times the author mentions how he dislikes books that teach the general idea and not how to implement that idea. I kept waiting for the “how to” section that could spread across disciplines. There is some probing questions, but most wouldn’t apply to a math classroom or an elementary teacher teaching multiple lessons a day.If you are an ELA, foreign language, or history teacher this book may be helpful, but as a math teacher I didn’t get much out of it.

This 5-star book is an amazing tool to implement in your classroom. The system (PIRATE) ABurgess sets up and the discussion of how to unlock your creative potential is just incredible.. Burgess has inspired me to learn a lot more about neuropsychology, how learning takes place in the brain, and education overall. I have applied several of his recommendations to retesters in biology (wholesome and passionate teaching with outside of the box thinking) and I've received lots of positive results.. engagement and classroom culture is much better.. etcOverall, very wonderful reading. Addressed my fear of not being a perfect teacher in my 2nd year, and has encouraged me to seek after excellence. Recommend this book to brand new teachers and those who are burned out or bummed out by the education system.. Define your passions! Rekindle the flame; the reason why you joined education!! Shape better future adults!

This is a very interesting book about making interesting lesson plans. The book contains a lot of lesson starter ideas that can be used to make unique lessons that might appeal to students.It talks a lot about creativity and has some very honest advice about how to stay motivated when teaching.I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to all teachers.

A few good ideas, but mostly just self-promotion for Dave Burgess. A much better book is The Innovator's Mindset by George Couros.

I've taught high school math for 31 years and have been through all the gimmicks and motivators. I've read books and gone to conferences looking for something truly inspiring with some "meat." Something that will help me be a better teach and help my kids be better learners. Some have managed decent pep-talks and a few have had a good idea or two to try in the classroom. But THIS book - I read it in a day and a half in June and was so excited about the things Dave says and the suggestions he has for writing better lesson plans that I immediately took it to my administrators and bought myself a new copy. I've thought about his ideas all summer, watched his videos, and listened to his podcaasts. I emailed the author and promptly received a link to free posters and guides to helpful book study questions. This is the book of my career! I teach quite a bit like Dave does, but in this book he gives suggestions on how to get others to find and keep that passion. Questions to ask ourselves, simple assignments to help us focus on what is important (write yourself a letter from a student at the end of the year). And then he gives real ideas for ways to create more intriguing and engaging lessons. It's a fun book to read - full of life and passion for kids rather than statistics and "educationese." This is the book I wish my principals would have us read. (This is the book that prompted me to write my very first online book review!)

I thought teaching like a pirate might have something to do with using other teachers ideas, but I was so wrong. Pirate is an acronym and Dave Burgess does a phenomenal job spelling out his ideas and using real examples from his classroom. He provides many questions to help you start brainstorming new ideas for your classroom. This book will leave you inspired and motivated to have better engagement in your own classroom.

I first met Joe in one of his talks years ago. He is a pharmacist and a clinical social worker. He offers "straight talk" on the psychiatric meds that I seldom find in the professional literature or drug company materials and a level of expertise that is very refreshing. This book is excellent, up to date, and a good read. He has added new material on discontinuing medications that I have never found anywhere else.For background, until retirement I was licensed as a clinical social worker and licensed professional counselor, with almost 50 years experience in mental health services in a broad variety of public and private settings.

Perfect book for mental health professionals who need a quick reference for drug prescription. This book has not only broadened by knowledge about mental health drugs, but has also helped me provide better patient care since I can talk with psychiatrists and MDs to recommend changes to meds with information to back up my claim. Really good investment for any mental health professional looking to expand their clinical library!

For transparency, I've known Ben Goldfarb for the better part of a decade and have enjoyed his journalistic writings about everything from shellfish to Yellowstone. But this book is something else!I have a bachelor's degree in wildlife biology and a PhD in aquatic ecology. I know quite a bit about beaver biology and, when Ben first mentioned he was going to write a book all about beavers, I was pretty skeptical that he could fill 250 pages with beaver information that would be interesting and approachable to a broad audience. And I was dead wrong.Every page is filled with phenomenal information about this crazy critter and is written in a humorous and captivating narrative. This book is unique because it doesn't tease apart the story of the beaver into chapters focused on ecology, evolution, and human-beaver interactions. Rather, Ben has weaved these components together to paint a holistic picture about beavers, illustrating the remarkably diverse interactions between this species' biology and the history of the North American landscape, both geologically and culturally. Perhaps most fascinating is the narrative Ben develops through interviewing all kinds of people from living beaver trappers, landscape managers, and academic scientists - all of whom are compelled in some way by this rodent.I've learned orders of magnitude more about beavers than I ever thought there was to know. If you're interested in American history, geology, natural history, culture, or are just a curious person - this book is for you.

As with any good story, this one has conflict, desire, greed, altruism, sex, love, death, politics, interesting characters, and a good measure of humor. Not what you'd expect from a book about beavers, is it?I agree with environmentalist and author Bill McKibben who said of Eager, "This witty, engrossing book will be a classic from the day it is published." I promised myself I'd read Melanie Dobson's newest novel slowly- I'd relish the experience day by day instead of rushing to find out what happened. I couldn't do it! Instead, I got so caught up in her characters hoping for a fairy tale ending, that I stayed up late every night. I felt everything the author wanted me to feel- times ten. I don't know how she does it, but this book hit me right in the gut. The surprising, redemptive twist caught me off guard... and that's all I'll say lest I spoil it for someone else. Like her other books, this is no light-weight novel. She weaves her themes so subtly yet by the end the reader is learning right alone with her. Beautiful and inspiring- a wonderful birthday gift for a friend.

If I could give this a higher star rating I would do so. We just read this as our book club book for Nov. To say it held me would be an understatement. It had twists and turns that I certainly didn't expect and gave a perspective through the characters that stunned me. An eye opener to the tragedy and heart break that so many lived through. Though a work of fiction, this book gave the readers a feeling of what many endured in the course of the occupation. The book goes from present day and the life of a young woman trying to cope with loss and pain to the setting if WW2 and the German occupation. As the story goes back and forth, Dobson entwined the lives of the characters and brings a heartfelt closing at the end of the final chapter. As an avid reader it's hard to throw a curve I don't see coming. This book did that in a big way!

Following the story of Annika, the castle’s caretaker, Max, the son of the castle’s owners, and Luzia, a young Jewish woman from Vienna, we meet intensely real characters full of longing, fear, strength, integrity, and doubt. They consider the easy way out, but recognize inner betrayal and a desolate end – one where they would forfeit life AND soul. Instead, they choose to give, to help, to sacrifice, and to keep their souls intact – something no enemy can take from them.Yet WWII also brings heinous evil and the darkest depths of mankind – other characters that are selfish and susceptible to their own fears. We find that true nobility doesn’t follow rank, fortune, or military power, but strength of heart, resolve of kindness, and sacrifice.As we consider the situations these characters encounter and choices they must make, we are prompted to an examination of our own hearts. What would I do? Could I stand strong, or would I succumb? What value do I put on my life? Is it in money, power, rank, safety, or comfort? Or in sacrifice, love, a legacy of beauty?As Callie must open her own heart to Annika, Max, and Luzia’s stories to solve her mystery, we are asked to do the same – to remember a period much rather forgotten. To recognize that tendrils of WWII reach into our today – asking us to not forget. That these stories are still as important to us now, reminding us that when strengthened by Jesus and His Goodness, His sacrificial love, that we too are capable of laying down our lives, even in the face of evil and death. Despite some acts beyond fathoming, God can still bring new life. That He can give us Hope for our darkest days, and that sometimes redemption lies not in circumstances changing, but in the formation of our character.

In times of terror we often wonder how we would respond. Few of us would have the courage of Annika when she gave her life for the happiness of Max, the man she loved, when she saved the life of Luzi. This act resulted in Charlotte finding her sister Luzi after any years of searching for family. Luzi at last found the baby sister Marta she sent away to safety during the Nazi occupation of Austria. It was a good story although I found it a bit confusing to follow the different time periods and the different characters within those periods.

This novel frequently quotes Biblical scripture and discusses Christian theology throughout the story centered through conversations and internal thoughts with the characters. Nearly every situation/event is directly tied back to the Bible and the Christian faith.There are no graphic or gory scenes in this novel that you typically find when reading Holocaust stories. No foul language. There is one sexual scene, but it does not describe anything in detail. It only states that he "forced himself on her".The authors craft is impressive because of the twists in the story which makes it hard to stop reading. The romance(s) are relatable and the ending was great. I specifically enjoyed the references and allegories to childrens books. That was unique and different. I included a picture of the back of the book which provides a good overall summary.I took a star off because:I was expecting a different angle or storyline perhaps since the setting was in Austria, but there wasn't any new information regarding this time and location in history. It was a typical back and forth story alternating between modern day and the past in which their intertwined relationship is finally revealed at the end. The manipulation of words and language was uninvolved and obvious.

A deep and satisfying novel. I finished this gripping time-slip mystery in the wee hours of the morning because I just couldn't put it down. This beautiful story has stayed with me long after reading the last page. I love the line on the back of the book "A gripping time-slip mystery about hidden treasure, a castle, and ordinary people who resisted evil in their own extraordinary way." A must read for fans of Historical Fiction and fans of Melanie Dobson!
