I am writing this for the whole series. Honestly I was not very thrilled after the 1st book, but I forced myself to go forward, hopping for the best. 1st person dialog is used, which makes a good development of the main character, however, because everything is seen through the eyes of one person, the rest of the characters lack depth, and it is hard to create a bond with them. As you encounter them many times through the story, you get to know them better, however, it is not ideal. You should keep going after 1st book, so do not give up just yet.The writing is getting better as the story goes on, less cheesy sex, and more action and adventure. In the last book the author gets half the book from 3rd person perspective, which is clearly an improvement in the writing style, and lets you get to know Mordred better. The narration is quite good, but it takes a little to get used with the narrator, which has some interesting intonations. The last 2 books are narrated by somebody else, which is not a plus(even if narration is good), as you get used with the original one through the previous 5 books. This being said, I recommend the books, and looking forward to follow the story into the Avalon Chronicles!
I found the first book in this series accidentally as I was book bored and looking for something a tad different from my usual. I must say, I'm very glad I ran across this. I have just finished this one (#3) and am happily on my way to purchase #4. I really wish I had gone ahead and bought the six book bundle....but you never know so, I'm just glad this series is turning out so well. The thing I like about these books are, the story line is pretty much wrapped up in each edition...with the taste of bigger and more sinister bad guys/situations to come. We all know it's going somewhere monumental, but the journey there is told very, very well. The author feeds you plenty in each book to keep the story running well and enticing you with what still remains hidden. And you REALLY want to know all the hidden stuff. Thank goodness there are many books in this series already. I'm not sure patience would prevail if there weren't a few more in the series ready for me to read. Keep up the great writing Mr. McHugh, I for one am really enjoying your story. :-)
I got into this series back when the first book "Crimes Against Magic" came out and loved the first two books. I really wanted to like this one too, but it's hard to go from the MC taking on 6 werewolves at once in the first book, to not being able to finish off one were in the 3rd.Granted, the times I've seen the characters get dumbed down was for plot convenience so they could be awesome at the end of the book; but I wasn't able to get through Nathan going from an unstoppable sorcerer assassin to someone who throws people into stuff with gusts of wind and then runs away.I want to read about the throw-it-down Garrett, but can't slog through most of the book having him run around doing nothing in the present to get to that part.
I was hoping to see more of his origins, and another blood curse mark removed in this book. I know you cant really see Nate advance too much, or there would be no advancement to story. I am interested in seeing more of his back ground, I do love there characters, and I like the story moving from past to present, and back again. Its also nice to see the quick reference to the past and present characters in book, and what race, and type of power they have. I cant wait to see more of his past be revealed, and seeing how he deals with it, and all his enemies getting a beat down as only Nate knows how to do. heheh
Similar to the previous books, two stories play out in different eras. Initially I had to concentrate to keep track of which story is which seeing that it played out in similar areas with the same characters. But otherwise the alteration between the stories were effectively done and shine some light on more recent events, relationships and power struggles. With Silent Screams is action-packed and gritty with a captivating plot. Luckily Nate has some magical healing abilities as he’s receiving one hell of a beating more than once. Steve McHugh expertly mixed ancient mythology with urban fantasy and provided a real entertaining read.
WITH SILENT SCREAMS BY STEVE MCHUGH: action packed from page one to the very ending Nate Garrett is in deep trouble again, then so are the people who killed his human friend Bill Moon. Nate is out for revenge plain and simple, kill the people who killed his friend and his wife. Easy you think? Heck no, when Nate Garrett is involved it gets really complicated real fast. As you can tell I've gotten hooked on the "Hellequin Chronicles" and cant say enough good things. If you like Urban Fantasy and/or a mystery splattered with blood and gore, and meeting up with Nates friends,( I'm not telling who you get to hear from) read WITH SILENT SCREAMS and be ready for a rollercoaster spanning from the 70's to present day & from one end of the country to the other and back again!
The story about Nate Garrett, aka Hellequin or Merlin's Assassin, is action-packed urban fantasy that combines all kinds of mythology into a cool black mix. The perspective is first person, which I enjoy, and our hero is a 1600 years old sorcerer who is less of a problem solver than a problem eraser. When everything is going down the drain and no-one can handle it, Nate is called in. However, there is politics involved as well and Nate is often considered a tool to be used and discarde, something he resents. Nate is not a kind man and carries with him the burden of a lot of death, but somehow manages to maintain a sense of conscience. In this installment we meet a new world and a frightening psychopath, but the action is as brutal and thrilling as ever. If you enjoy dark urban fantasy with a noir twist this is a must read.
