A complete and outstanding review of the river and its environs. Lots of general information about the area, historic (from before the Romans to today) and practical. Most of the book is a kilometer by kilometer description of the river. Facing pages describe the river going downstream from Basel, Switzerland; right side is the right bank, left side the left. Smaller cities encountered along the river are described here, larger cities have more of a complete description in the back. The book includes a large, fold-out map of the entire river, from above Lake Constance to Rotterdam. There's a focus on K-D Cruises but will work for any cruise. If you're taking a Rhine cruise it's a must, if you're just interested in the region buy it anyway as a regional handbook. I bought an older edition for an upcoming Rhine cruise and find it an invaluable resource.

Sooooooooooo disappointed! I bought this guide because it promised "including free map" on the cover. Not. There was no map. I gave it 2 stars because I don't like to "hate" a product like this. Send me the map that should have accompanied this and I'll revise my review.
