I really got caught up in the history of jazz drumming,I didn't know that people like no Jones,sid catlett and several others not even known were the jumping point of bop drumming, excellent book on drummers who deserve recognition and praise for their tributes to jazz,no more said check this book out for yourself,😎
There is nothing in the present that didn't come from the past.. and that includes drumming and drummers.. Without an understanding the beginnings of an art form it remains shallow in content.. Great book and an enjoyable read.
Fascinating history of some of the greats of the early big band era. Extensive interviews with the drummers and those who heard them.Pro tip: You'll be going through a chapter and the author will mention a recording that demonstrates some particular aspect of the drummer's skills. When they're not available here on Amazon, I've found a lot of the more obscure recordings on YouTube. Fortunately, Korall is very specific about recording dates and labels. (Hint to the publisher: Publish this along with CDs of referenced recordings!)The experience is a lot more immersive with the recordings and the book side-by-side - as good as his descriptions are, it's no substitute for hearing a recording, since "live" is no longer and option. I just wish recording techniques in the 20's and 30's were better!

This book is written with so much love and expertise.Burt Korall did alot of rechearch and shares his experience and knowlegde of the tradition of swing and bebop.we learn alot about how the important drummers developed, studied, relate to there instrument and playing circumstances.There is also profound technical analysis and transcribed solo's and rudimentchart included.
