This 2017 edition was a pretty good guide book. I stayed about 11 days in Shanghai, making my way around on my own and also used the book for a day in Suzhou and 3 days Hangzhou and felt very comfortable. Unlike the LP guide to China which weighs a ton and is almost unusable in the field because of this, this book easily slid in and out of the side pocket of my back pack.Sometimes I had a hard time combining the overlapping maps in the back with the maps in the chapters and the walking maps. Sometimes I wished there was more on the different shopping and dining opportunities. In this respect I felt that the authors, not being long-time residents of Shanghai, lacked a deeper understanding of where to shop and dine and stay, but this is a finer point for a longer time tourist. The starred restaurant were definitely good selection, though I had a super excellent hotel that wasn't listed here even though it was a huge chainThough in general, I liked the maps in the back. I wished the walking tours were longer and more descriptive. I did them all. This was my second time in Shanghai.Just one warning, everyone uses smartphone pay systems as of September 2018, and it is hard to get a taxi and even occasionally pay for things. VISA is almost useless besides in hotels. Taxis avoid you because they don't want to use cash and are often busy chasing online customers. Non-Chinese are more or less not allowed to put money in Chinese banks and therefore cannot take advantage of all the WeChat and AliPay have to offer the regular Chinese citizens who use WeChat Pay or AliPay or UnionPay almost exclusively.I'd really like to give the book a 5, but a 4.5 is more like it and so I'll have to give it a 4 stars.
What a great resource this was for our recent trip to Shanghai! We took it everywhere we went and used it as a guide for itinerary planning. I found the phrase translations at the back very valuable although my pronunciations were lacking. 😕 The pullout map was a bonus.We went to a few of the recommended restaurants which were good and discovered other ones on our own. Shanghai has so many small family-run places to eat, many of which are cheap and utilitarian.I'd recommend this book for anyone planning a trip to Shanghai, especially if you have several days to explore.
Super helpful, was our "bible" on our trip. By following suggested walks we maximized eyeing sites in a short amount of time.
As a rule, it is difficult to stay interested in travel books after perusing the first pages and fight to read the small print and look at the irrelevant color pictures. This book is no different—it does the job.
A great addition to bring to Shanghai. Not totally necessary, but helps you choose which sights to prioritize.
