About the Author

Ben Carter is a studio potter and workshop instructor based in Santa Cruz, California. He received his BFA in ceramics/painting from Appalachian State University and his MFA in ceramics from the University of Florida. He has been an artist-in-residence at the Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts in Asheville, North Carolina, Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colorado, and the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana. From 2010–2012 he served as the Education Director of the Pottery Workshop in Shanghai, China. He has lectured and presented workshops at universities and craft centers in the United States, China, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand and exhibited internationally in numerous invitational and juried shows, including the Australian Ceramic Triannale Exhibition, Shanghai University International Residency Exhibition, and Mastery in Clay at The Clay Studio. I was planning to flip through the book, check out a little of what he covered in the book, then set it aside to look at more thoroughly tonight or this weekend... An hour later, I realized my quick flip through wasn't nearly so quick after all! I am thoroughly impressed at the amount of helpful knowledge he included in one book. Each topic flows effortlessly into the next in a sensible order. My very first pleasant surprise was the fact that Ben tackled studio safety immediately instead of as an afterthought at the back of the book. In addition to the standard parts about material safety, he also discusses how to prevent aches and strain on the artist's body through posture choices as well as exercises.The text was easy to understand without being simple. The book reads like he is talking directly to the reader. He shows exactly how to achieve a variety of forms using photos and illustrations coupled with smart descriptions about why you need to take those steps. He provides important tips and tricks that many experienced potters take for granted and he tackles philosophical topics like the implied curve of the form and the positive-negative space correlation.From the foot of a pot to the knob of a lid and all of the shapes of thrown forms in between, he's got it covered. Sketched profile examples, pictures of pots cut in half to reveal a cross-section, and tons of step-by-step photos fill the book from cover to cover.It's been quite a while since such a comprehensive and well-considered book on wheel throwing has been written. This is yet another great potter's book that I've come across. I teach ceramics at a community college, and I am a potter with a studio in my garage in my spare time. I like to find books that are useful for me, but I know will also be useful for my students. It's always great when I can read a book and find new information after being a potter for nearly 15 years. I hope to continue finding new, informative books and continue expanding my knowledge in the field, even after I've been doing it for 30, 50 or more years.I found some great wheel throwing tips in this book. It prompted me to rearrange my studio and get a better set up for me wheel. I now have a wheel that I stand at with a built-in water bucket and plenty of space to set things on around it. I'm really happy with it, and I've been getting ramped up for some serious studio time.The techniques shown in the book are wonderful, and I would highly recommend it to any potter, beginning, intermediate or advanced. It never hurts to keep reading, learning, and expanding your knowledge of the field.

I almost didn't by this book, thinking I could learn all I needed to learn on YouTube, but I'm so happy that I did. This book goes far beyond a how-to book and goes into how to approach the design of your pieces, what to consider, and why. It discusses larger concepts about creating pottery than just how to throw.There's valuable information here that you don't find in simple instructional videos although those certainly also have an important place in my education. I'm only 1/4 of the way through this book but have already learned much more than I have online or in my pottery class.

A good book to learn a lot of general concepts and methods for throwing pottery. I'm trying to self teach after having taken classes many years ago. While this is a good resource that I like to spend some time with before a throwing session, I'm still looking for that "teacher in a book" that can help me troubleshoot very specific problem areas. However, I did learn a number of general concepts that I've enjoyed trying, or am looking forward to trying.

It has been 33 years since I last tried to throw a pot and I have forgotten almost everything. This book is very clearly written with excellent photographs and has shown me step by step how to throw pots and create art from clay. There are plenty of books available on this subject, but I am glad I chose Mastering the Potter's Wheel.

I enjoyed this book and I think you should make a step by step DVD video for beginners potters. You are a great teacher you provided more information on this week than I received on a $200 one month in class training.

This book is so well done from start to finish. As a hobby potter of 10yrs practice, I learned a lot. In particular this book recommends a series of skill-building exercises which I wish I had practiced years ago. If you are serious about wheel-practice and want to grow your skills, this book is the best.The photographs used illustrate the techniques and of finished work are excellent. The book itself is of top quality.

This is a great resource to have! Multiple examples, explanations of what and why, and a lot of very valuable pictures and text so that things all come together. Well worth the very reasonable cost.

Wish I would have had this book first. I purchased another book years ago on drawing caricatures and failed miserably. I gave up and have not tried to draw this style again, until now. My art style has always been realism, drawing portraits, animals and still life. It is very hard for me to loosen up and drawing something that is not exact in the way it's "supposed" to be. I've recently become very interested in illustration and am trying to learn a totally different style. Of all the books I have purchased recently to help me on my new journey, I have to say this one has really been a fantastic tool! The teaching style is very interesting. The topic is pretty well covered with some definite good advice for the beginning caricature artists. This guy has taught the art of caricature drawing and you can certainly tell from this book.

This book is intended to train you how to do quick 3 minute caricatures. It's not intended to train you how to do some of the great caricatures that the top pros do by maybe doing a few thumb nail sketches and more analysis to make some of the best caricatures ever made. Some of the low rating on this book I think are caused by people who don't understand the various categories of caricature art. I'm a scribbler 'sketchy' type artist who wants to improve to a 'strong hand' first try kind of caricaturist. All of the categories have their place. I can work things out with a light pencil and then ink over my work, but I lack the ability to do one of these dash off quickly types of caricatures. This book is great training for this approach. Trust the system. On page 22 is the basic system which is the core of the book. At first you repeat the system not worrying about a likeness. It's all about process and speed. Do a three minute marker drawing 10 times a day. This book is all about the 3 minute drawing. It works.Update: I have found some of Hamernik's videos on line going over the chapters of this book. Do a search of Hamernik videos. They are on Vimeo. They are helpful to look at, especially videos 3 through 5 where he does some demos using a marker. I find it better to see such videos as you can see very clearly the process he uses and the hand positions and tempo. You often miss stuff like that with digital vids as all you see is a cursor moving around. There is maybe a little more of a performance aspect to this kind of drawing as you're trying to do it all with direct strokes in one shot.

This is a great book for learning how to do caricatures. It gives simple demonstrations for every step of drawing a caricature. It teaches you how to draw caricatures with face looking at you, in profile, and 3/4 view. There are pages devoted just to features and drawing hair. This book has helped me a lot in my caricature drawing.

Good informational book. Drawing is my favroite thing to do and teaching our triplets is fun but I always need more ideas to help the one that are very gifted in drawing. I've never been very good with faces with the exception of cartoons. This has helped me express myself in a new way.

This is a helpful and fun book. One thing I wish were different, is the author advises artists to practice drawing many variations on facial features, but there aren't a great number of examples included. But definitely a fun and useful book for someone who uses it to practice.

I've always loved drawing faces, but I often got frustrated because I would only occasionally get a quick sketch that I liked. My goal was to learn how to draw a face quickly that is recognizably the person I'm looking at...this book does a fantastic job of doing just that. Simply put: if you want a method to draw faces quickly then this is your book! I have to admit the kind of markers you use will dramatically determine the speed you draw with too. I recommend buying a bunch of different markers and finding the one that works for you. I have the kindle book on my iPhone...love it. The images ported over well. I have no complaints. Just buy the book and start drawing!

Harry Hamernik is one of the people I learned caricatures from about 10 years ago at Sea World In San Diego. He then moved on to be manager at Legoland and Knott's Berry Farm. I helped him start operations at Knott's, hiring 30+ artists who never drew with a marker or with a live model in front of them. It was the first time I tried to train that many artists but Harry had already been doing it for years, every season a new batch of crazy artists. So he knows how to present the needed information and reach a wide range of people. Unlike a lot of the "how to draw" books being produced these days by general artists who try to capitalize on the expanding market by publishing books outside of their field of experience, Harry is a working professional in the field. He's also an instructor at The Art Institute in San Diego, so he knows how to teach.I also continue to teach caricatures and was thinking of writing my own book but I won't bother now. There's not much I could add to this book, I would just saying the same things in my own words. He's thought through the quick sketch process and included everything a beginner would need to know. It will also help a more experienced artists who's self taught or needs a fresh perspective on the craft. It's full of useful, step by step examples with photos of the model to compare the drawings to. He's made my job a lot easier, now when I hire an artist and begin training them I require that they practice from Harry's book and I just check on their progress.I highly recommend this book.Don Flaws

A majority of the recipes that I have seen from other source have ingredients like cans of soup or dry mixes that I would never use. Other books also have so many exotic ingredients that most home cooks don't have on hand. This book has so many recipes that use real food and ingredients that I either already have on hand or would also use for multiple recipes. The book is organized in a way to easily find what you are interested in cooking. This book has some errors but still a good cookbook with delicious recipes. I want to see pictures but the book has no pictures, I have tried some recipes and it may help you, if yes then encourage me by hitting the thumbs up.

Love this book! Not only does it have great recipes, but it also breaks down the Instant Pot and explains pretty much everything you could want to know about it. The tips and charts are particularly helpful for someone like me who is always trying to convert recipes to the Instant Pot. The book covers all of the functions of the Instant Pot and the recipes range from homemade yogurt to lamb and chickpea stew. This one is the best of them all. Author gives lots of information about using the Instant Pot (my current favorite appliance; saying a lot when there is a microwave oven in the room), as well as a bunch of interesting recipes. Probably the most valuable aspect of the book is the way Alice Newman helps the Instant Pot owner have the confidence to try their own recipes--either old favorites or new ideas. Highly recommended, nice way.

I have three instant pot books but this book is the superstar. The recipes are easy to understand and came out delicious, the down side of this book is It has no pictures, but still a good cookbook with huge amount of recipes. If you want to buy a good instant pot cookbook, then this is the one I’ll recommend to everyone.

The author, Kenneth Abraham, has an extremely strong knowledge of Tort law (he's written/edited several books & casebooks for top publishers) and presents the subject in clear, well-organized language. Abraham makes key concepts in Torts easy to understand. The work is comprehensive and insightful. Makes a great supplement to class reading.Although I haven't read the newest edition (2007--3rd ed.), my recommendation would be that unless you have unlimited financial resources, get the 2002 (2nd) edition because the general principles of Tort law for a first-year level course change very little over a short period of time.One thing to note--some students may want a Gilbert's/Emanuel style outline in addition to this book, since the Concepts and Insights Series books (to which this Tort book belongs) present an overview of the main areas within each subject but -- since they are fairly brief -- can't provide the amount of complex detail that those types of commercial outlines do.

If you are really struggling with torts, this book will give you a good overview. However, your time is better spent working through tests.

Unless your torts prof is going to demand that you know specific case names, this book provides all the information you need to do well in any 1L torts class. If you can understand what this book trying to get across then you understand torts. It's just that simple.I did not find any topic that was discussed in class or in the casebook which was glaringly missing from this study aid. Furthermore, the book is written in simple language and is very easy to read. Moreover, the book is written in a quasi outline form which can help you if you choose to write your own torts outline.Only one caveat is that occasionally this book editorializes about the importance or lack thereof of certain concepts. Res Ipsa Loquitor being one of them. Remember your professor is always right and if they think something is important, it is important, regardless of what any study aid says.

Fantastic book! Absolutely recommend if you have a professor (like I did) who is more focused on the "why" of each concept than on the sure 20 page black letter hornbook style torts. But that said this was still a quick read (a la hornbooks). Absolutely recommend, and the seller shipped it quickly and it was in good condition so all around win. Awesome.

I am a torts law professor and this is one of the two books I recommend my students use as supplementary reading. It is a relatively short but comprehensive and very well written summary of the material. Torts is a required course in all law schools and this book will help any student get a more complete understanding of the topic. Students, will, of course, need to read and prepare the assignments from whatever text the professor assigns. This book will work best as a supplement to those texts. By the way, the other book I recommend to my students is Understanding Torts by Diamond [and others].

This book is an excellent prep for those learning about torts. Although, before reading it you should have a little legal knowledge or the beginning might be a little difficult. All that said, very good book for the subject.

This book is a great compliment to torts class. It definitely helps to reinforce topics learned in class.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Well written, neutral, unbiased, and factually accurate without any of the author's conclusions. This book should be required for high schoolers in southern California and Arizona. A study in human nature, leadership, and man's failure to live within his means. The story is better than any TV script could be written, and the author flawlessly keeps track of all the subplots and adds in enough of the odd behavior and personality of the players to remind the reader that these are real people. I can't help but wonder if this author is somehow related to the Nadeau who built the road to Cerro Gordo in Death Valley and used to run a steamboat across Owens Lake to carry ore and supplies. Either way, I cannot recommend this book more, great read on a great subject.

Very well researched, gave a complete and accurate account of the Owens Valley/LA story as well as a very detailed history of the development of Imperial Valley, the struggle to get Boulder Dam built and how the Southwestern states were at last able to come to some agreement on water rights from the Colorado River.

Read this if you want to understand the back story of the movie "Chinatown." Also, you may be moved to visit the quiet paradise of the Eastern Sierra in California. The intensity of feelings and politics regarding water are both even more intense today than in the period in which this book is set. An excellent read. "There it is...take it."

Had the pleasure of picking this book up at the USFS store located in Mammoth Lakes, California. Without water nothing can flourish, it is the basis for life on this planet. Remi A. Nadeau---Stanford graduate---gives us a study into water and the power of those who govern this precious resource.Do watch Chinatown for the backstory as it provides a scintillating morsel of desire for the lifelong curious wanting to reconcile the mnemonic of a bruised, battered and bloody Jack Nicholson. Documents well the history of the LA/Owens River struggle (which continues somewhat today).Remi delineates an adventure into human nature (explores both dark and light). He has a truly gifted lens and reminds us of the character aspirations which have their own subplots. Required history for anyone living in California/Arizona. Be prepared for death, life and prosperity and avarice. Buy, buy, buy!

Great read.

I searched for about a year before finding this book (in the days before Amazon.com) and when I finally found it, I wasn't disappointed. The book is a few decades old now, but the writing style, being clean and un-flowery, is still as accessable today as when it was first written. Deeply informative and enjoyable, it's actually a bit of a page-turner, and is in fact recommended by scholars such as Catherine Mulholland and Dr. J. David Rogers as a fair and serious work documenting the history of Los Angeles' water saga from the 1870's up through the building of the Colorado River Aqueduct for the MWD in the middle of the 20th Century. A must for your California history bookshelf!

Their wishes are written on special paper, tied to an orange, and tossed up into the branches of the tree. Bitter when his wish for Grandmother's recovery isn't granted, Ming avoids the tree until, years later, he returns to the village and acknowledges the happiness the tree brought. I absolutely love that this story is based upon a real Banyan "Wishing Tree" in a small village called Lam Tsuen in Hong Kong, and that there are other smaller ones among Hong Kong's countryside.As if the story wasn't beautiful enough, the author took a lot of time explaining about wishing trees and how they are either banyan or camphor trees because these kinds of trees because they have aerial roots that curve & twist into unsual shapes that seem to look magical! She then goes on to tell her reader tells us that people come all though out the year to toss their wishes onto the wishing trees branches, but the majority of the people come during their Lunar New Year. She also speaks of the Ng Bo Dip which means "5 Treasures Piles" in Cantonese that the wishes are written. The brightly colored red & gold papers are then tied to a Mandarin Orange and thrown high into the branches of the wishing tree. I bet it's a beautiful sight! My book was delivered sooner than expected and in good condition. This one was 1 of a series of 24 currently out-of-print and now I have them all.

I have read the first thirteen of the Phantom Stallion series, and Golden Ghost is one of my favorites. Like all the Phantom Stallion books, a lot of different story lines are presented throughout the book. You get to know not only the human characters, but also the horses, each of which have their own personality as well. I highly recommend the Phantom Stallion series for any horse lover!

This was actually the first Phantom Stallion book I read. I won it from our libary when I was ten and I didn't really care for it at that time. I re read it a few months ago and loved it!! This one is a great book if you like mysteries along with horses. It's one of my favorite.

This is a fantastic book. It is a mystery that involves Jen's family's lost horse, the ghost town, and the water that has chemicals in it that kills animals. You should defenetly read this book!!

Sam and Jen have been assigned to do a report on the ghost town of NuggetWhile they're there they see a horse that looks to be a ghost! It's not a ghost but it's the lost Kensworthy palomino Golden Rose! Jen's parents are fighting andon the break of moving to town. Jen is desperate to keep her family together but the only way is to catch Rose. And just how easy is it to catch a horse that's been freefor over 2 yrs? Sam sees The Phantom with Rose and if The Phantom wants Rose as his new lead mare it will be even harder to catch Rose. But finally they are able to catch herand bring her home.

We bought this book for our granddaughter who enjoys reading books about horses. In particular, she loves this series. She wanted Book #8 to help complete her collection.
