This is a wonderful continuation of the first volume, The Hitchhiker 's Guide to the Galaxy. The ex-president of the Galaxy is now on a quest to meet the person who runs the universe but, thanks to improbability, he and his traveling companions are swung into an adventure the likes of which they couldn't have imagined.This is humor mixed with imaginative nonsense of the best sort and some food for thought, yes, at a restaurant. You have to have patience for philosophical gibberish set in hilarious tones, but that is half the fun. Once you meet the ruler of the universe, you'll find it explains a lot.Warning: don't read this while sipping tea or any other beverage. It will shot out of your nose when you start laughing.

The "Restaurant At The End Of The Universe" is the sequel to the epic "The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy" and the adventure and wackiness ensues once more as Arthur Dent(human), Ford Precept(from Betelguise), Trillion the "Heart Of Golds" co Captain and the ex President of the Galaxy Zaphod, and of course there's Marvin the depressed robot. Absurd situations lead to laugh out loud hilarity, mostly from Marvin who has a bigger role in this tale. And now the question is "What is number 42?". The answer is somewhere inside the head of Arthur, however nobody seems to have the answer yet, although maybe a certain robot does? The book can only be described as pure fun for anyone.The book starts right where the first left off. They just want a little bite to eat is all, is that too much to ask?, apparently so. The Heart Of Golds improbability drive does not work and a mysterious man from Zaphod's past is their only hope. Whereupon the crew of the ship gets separated from each other. Arthur and Ford find themselves on a another planet and must find a way to escape. They steal a very important ship that belong to the galaxies number one rock band "Disaster Area". When Arthur and Ford teleport and find themselves on a Golgafrinchen Ship which crash lands on prehistoric Earth with a bunch of mumbling idiots, even Arthur trying to teach them Scrabble doesn't help with the ultimate question. And what about Zaphod, he may find out something of himself he's not ready to accept.This is the second book of the Hicthhiker series and was published in 1980.

I did the Audiobook, and it is really really read well. The book of course is hilarious. If you have never read the series, read it in book form first. The audiobook is a great way to experience it again when gardening or jogging, the type of activity that does not require concentration.

This book should be read after the "The hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", due to the fact that "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" starts where the previously mentioned book ends. That is, with the two survivors to the Earth's destruction, Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect, traveling along Trillian, Marvin the robot and Zaphod Beeblebrox in the "Heart of gold", a stolen Improbability Drive ship.If you read this book, you will go along with our friends in their adventures, for example when they visit Milliways, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, or when they escape certain destruction in a stuntship used by rockstars. You will also learn the real meaning of "dying for a cup of tea", and have a chance to eat meat that wants to be eaten. Of course, Marvin will continue giving you lessons in pessimism, and Zaphod will go on being "so weird that he should be in movies".I liked this book, but I didn't love it nearly as much as "The hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". What is more, "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" doesn't have a clear ending, and I find some fault in that. Of course, I am more than ready to read the next book in the series, but that is not the point.On the whole, I don't recommend "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" to those that haven't read "The hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", due to the fact that they won't enjoy it so much. Notwithstanding that, I do recommend this book as entertaining reading material for those already addicted to Douglas Adams quirky sense of humour. It is not perfect, but it is more than good enough to enjoy :)Belen Alcat

This is a great book and a great author and I love all things Douglas AdamsHOWEVERI feel totally ripped off by this ridiculous Audible Kindle version.I have several of the other Audible Hitchhikers books from iTunes. They work great.I bought the Kindle add on version and I can not get it to work at all.I finally attempted to get a refund from the "Bought by mistake" (it sure was a mistake buying this) and it says I am not eligible to return it but does not say why.BE WARE THE AUDIBLE KINDLE ADD ON MAY JUST BE A WASTE OF MONEY FOR YOU TOO.

The sequel is just what you'd expect if you've read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Think about carrying forward all human foibles into the galaxy and that pretty much sums up the book. Parts were great (the restaurant is a place everyone should visit at least once in all eternity) but I found other parts of the book a bit slow. Marvin is certainly one of the best android characters of all time. Trillian pretty much gets left out of this book (sorry Zooey Deschanel, no reprise role for you).

As a book editor prior to entering the nursing student world, I can confidently say this book is laborious, contradictory, and dull. And I used to edit Old Testament exegetical tomes ... that had no illustrations. This is worse.I would greatly appreciate it if medical schools did more research on which textbooks clearly teach the topics necessary to master, so that—as their students struggle with purposefully bewildering multiple-choice exams—they could fully grasp the life-or-death concepts necessary to help and heal patients.ATTN Nursing School Faculty: Read at least 3 randomly selected chapters (preferably on a topic you are somewhat unfamiliar with ... like a newbie student would) in each book you assess for purchase. Do you feel as though the terminology is clearly defined? Could you teach someone else the concept you just learned about ... or are there gaps in your newly grasped idea, made evident as you attempt to explain it to another adult?Then that book is leaving gaps for your students, which is leaving gaps in their performance for patients.

If your course reading assignments are given by page number, rather than entire chapters or units, steer clear of the kindle edition. There's no page numbers, just location numbers, which won't correspond to what's assigned. Also, there's no access code if you're looking to use The Point.

This book was required for my class except they did mention ed. 13 instead, however, I decided to get the 14th edition b/c the price was the same for a new 13th edition and 14th edition so why not get the updated info for the same price? As stated, I got a new book and it was received in the plastic wrap and let me tell you these books, emphasis on bookS (it's a bundle, volume 1 & 2), are heavy. I was not expecting the package to be that heavy. Books were clean, never used, no dents, or scratches. I haven't read them yet, but I feel prepared to start reading ahead for this coming semester!! Before I purchased I asked if this came with online access I was told it did which was important bc the course i needed it for does online assignments on the publishers site "Thepoint". turns out the online access is only for additional study materials and not access to The point which would leave me needing to purchase separate online access which costs as much as the book does. for only a few $$$ more than this book set you can buy an online version which has the entire book AND comes with the online access needed. If you dont need access to The Point then the book is fine,

I was under the impression that the book would be divided into 2 separate volumes but was surprised to see that it is all together. I’m extremely disappointed and I hope the book doesn’t just fall apart considering how massive it is. I paid for a new book but it wasn't wrapped or anything. I recommend you buy this off the website and not on amazon.

Very disappointed. I work in surgical field- thoracic surgery, and for that part I can say that the book is 5-10 years out-of-date. In fact, I have one of the previous editions and there is almost no change.

This is probably my worst purchase all year. The platform does not have valid page numbers, there is not an easy way to get to the chapters, it is impossible to copy any of the information such as definitions to study, and everyone else who purchased this book received a code to use online to access study information. Lastly, the book is quite "wordy" where you will read the same information over, and over to where it is quite boring. There are not many pictures or priority information boxes. Please consider buying the Medical-Surgical Nursing 9th Edition Ingatavicius, Workman, and Rebar book.

Can as one book. Thought it was 2 volumes but still a good deal for the large book. Our instructor actually uses the book. They delivered good timing. Has chapter and page detail of content. Great subtopic headlines. Easy to follow.

This book assembles and presents in large format and brilliant color a considerable number of clocks, artistic and technical masterworks, made by Peter Stretch and his sons, Philadelphia's premiere clockmakers prior to 1750. Extensively researched and lucidly written, it underscores the importance of clocks to early Philadelphians as objects of beauty and status as well as mechanical instruments that facilitated negotiating the many complex and interwoven aspects of urban life. As such, this book not only opens an interesting window to America's historical past, but also, by extension, enlightens readers on the importance of measuring time in present-day urban life.

They completely forget that already during colonial times clocks were produced in North America. The volume admittedly was small, but the years 1700 to 1750 are also part of our horological heritage. This lack of awareness may be partly caused by the lack of books about colonial horology. I can think of only one other major book that has been published on that subject [ That book, not coincidently, is also by one of the authors of the book under review: Hohmann: Timeless - Masterpiece American Brass Dial Clocks (New York: 2009, ISBN 978-0-9789689-1-5). It documents 96 high quality tall case clocks from 1720 to 1785 produced throughout the colonies, and provides a broader context for the book under review ], and certainly the book under review is the first and only book that describes the life, the oeuvre and the socio-economic environment of a colonial era American clockmaker in depth and in detail.The protagonist is Peter Stretch (1670-1746) a Quaker clockmaker from Leek (Staffordshire, UK) who immigrated to Philadelphia with his young family in 1703, only 20 years after the settlement was founded. With 4000 people it was the third largest settlement of North America (New York had 5000 and Boston about 6000). His timing was good; during his lifetime, Philadelphia became the largest and wealthiest settlement of the continent.The book is the result of a close cooperation between two experts of the subject: Donald Fennimore is a historian and the retired Curator of Metal Objects of the Winterthur Museum in Delaware, and Frank Hohmann is a collector and expert on colonial era, brass dial American clocks. Together, they have created a book that will be equally cherished by horologists, by antiques collectors, and by Philadelphia local history buffs.The book was triggered by the October 4, 2004 sale of a clock by Peter Stretch at Sotheby's in New York. At 2:08 p.m. that Thursday afternoon a "Queen Anne Carved and Figured Mahogany Tall Case Clock, Peter Stretch, Philadelphia, Circa 1740" set a world record (still unbroken) for an American made clock when it sold for $ 1'688'000. The Winterthur Museum was the winning bidder. The clock has since been gently restored, and is worth a detour - if not a trip - if you find yourself in the mid-atlantic states.To fully understand and appreciate that `record breaking clock' it is necessary to not only study the object, but to examine the context of its creation, i.e. the whole oeuvre of Peter Stretch, his whole biography, and the whole sociological, economic and historic environment of Quaker dominated Philadelphia in the first half of the 18th century. The first two chapters of the book (57 pages) describe the early history of Philadelphia, the roots of the Stretch family as Quakers in England prior to Peter's 1703 emigration to America, and his life as an engaged and prominent member of the religious, civic and business community of rapidly growing Philadelphia from 1703 to 1746. The third chapter (45 pages) is a narrative of the technical and stylistic evolution of Stretch made clocks during the first half of the 18th century. It also discusses tools, equipment and shop practices, as well as the general development of horological trade in the city during those years. To an amazing extent the story is told by quoting numerous original contemporary sources such as newspapers, advertisements, letters, inventories, wills, minutes of Quaker assemblies, etc. (there are 244 footnotes in the first three chapters, most of them referring the reader to the original source documents).To create the book the authors launched a major effort to identify as many surviving clocks as possible made by Peter Stretch (and his three clock-making sons, who all made their early clocks in their father's shop). Eventually, their database grew to 133 Stretch clocks (most of them tall case clocks), and for 84 of them (including 62 signed by Peter Stretch) the owners, both major museums and institutions, as well as individuals, agreed to have their pieces photographed, described in detail, and published in the book.The descriptions of these 84 clocks make up the 180 page `Catalog section', which is the core of the book. For 79 of these clocks the catalog entry is a standardized double page spread including four high resolution color photographs [ a- enlarged dial view, b- ¾ left view of the full clock in its case, c- ¾ proper left back view of movement with dial attached, d- ¾ proper right front view of movement with dial removed ]. For each clock, there is a short narrative on case and movement, plus a comment section (often including provenance). Dimensions are provided. For each of five particularly elaborate or important clocks an additional two pages of text and photos have been added.The last section of the book is made up of seven appendices: 1.
