I bought this as a gift for my adult son, who wanted to read Treasure Island after watching Black Sails. I know he will love it !Although this is a beautifully bound book, it does not really feel like leather. Be aware that the font is probably an 8 so you might need to use reading glasses.
I've only read 3 of the 7 novels in this collection. They are Treasure Island, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and The Black Arrow. At some point in the future I will finish by reading the remaining 4. Treasure Island is fun as an adventure story. It sets a tone, however, for characters turning heel. Characters flip their allegiances without sufficient explanation or contextual framework, such as Long John Silver. I also noticed, this being my first Stevenson, that great actions scene are not described in vivid detail or that the action was not keeping my attention. In any case, Treasure Island would stimulate the young, boyish imagination. The Strange Case of Jekyll and Hyde thrives on stoic characters, intellectuals reminiscent of Holmes and Watson in their perception and perseverance. Even more English than Treasure Island, the curious professionals Gabriel John Utterson and Hastie Lanyon represent an old moral guard and the proper way to exercise intellectual faculties as governors of society. The point of view of the narrative may surprise readers who may think this story is supposed to be more horror than symbolism.I have to stop at 3 novels for now because of the third: The Black Arrow. Although the story begins with testosterone-challenging images of a Dystopia, the kind of story that posts the sign "No Girls Allowed," it eventually degenerates into a goofy romance. Worse, it becomes far too long with too many characters turning heel and for no good reason. The problem with this is the question readers must have about the worth of the main character, Richard Shelton, with all the unreliability of traitors or mercenaries. So far I must say simply that Stevenson's gift was not the characterization of young love. Stevenson himself regretted the overly-wrought Medieval language, which I found skillful and of linguistic value ... except for how much longer it drew out a story which should have been half its length
Recently I'm on the trail of Scottish literature, and after a sampling of contemporary, this was my first venture into the classical (19th century). This volume is headed by an astute forward, that points out that, although academia had attempted to dismiss Stevenson for some time, in fact his genius contributed to the foundations of current culture including what comes to mind when someones says "pirate", and his fame is in rejuvenation.I also see much of Samuel Clemens in his method. This leather bound seems sturdy enough, I took it off on a camping trip, but its debatable whether we are talkin' true leather.Has a bookmark ribbon, an apropos classical touch.
Treasure Island (1883), Prince Otto (1885), Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde (1886), Kidnapped (1886), The Black Arrow (1888), The Master Of Ballantrae (1889), David Balfour (1893) . . . . . . . . .This is without doubt the finest collection of Robert Louis Stevenson novels, all neatly gathered together into one single volume! The seven titles that are contained within this Canterbury Classics special edition are his best-selling and most popular works of literature ever produced! During that time period between 1883 and 1893, came the golden period where Robert Louis Stevenson created some of the most memorable adventures of the late Victorian era! This premium hardback book comes with an exquisitely designed front cover, superb quality pages with gilt edging, several beautifully printed illustrations throughout the book and a silk ribbon marker. For those who love the works of Robert Louis Stevenson, this book is a real treat to whoever owns it - a priceless gem that will provide several hours of great enjoyment and last for many years to come . . . . . .I, Tony Strawson, rate this book with five stars because it ticks all the requirements one would expect in this Canterbury Classics edition!!!
This is the first RLS I've ever read and I found him difficult. Convoluted story line and poor character development. I know RLS is iconic but I find him very difficult to read. He challenges not by what he says but how he says it.
Can’t recommend this. Unpacked the book and opened it. Heard a crackling noise as the binding split on the front. Opened to the back page with the same noise and same split. Had to return on first day.
A beautifully bound collection of Robert Louis Stevenson's novels, this was a gift for my grandson's. Lessons from the classics is one of the greatest gifts you can give a child and Stevenson was and is a great author. If I were to nitpik, it would be nice if there were some illustrations contained in the seven volumes; however, the lack of illustrations doesn't distract from the great quality of the writing and the ability to create the "theater of the mind," something I believe is missing in the vast quantity of books published today. Too many illustrations detract from letting your mind build the scenes. Recommend this volume to anyone interested in having a great collection of Robert Louis Stevenson's novels, contained a gorgeous single volume.
Is a must. Of course Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a great novel, Kidnapped is filled with supense, but for me the best of his novels is the Master of Ballantrae: an indepth study of two opposite minds ( two brothers) and relentless pursual of one of them (Abel and Cain?)
