Wow!!! What a beautiful calendar! I'm so glad I found this calendar. I had previously been to Provence last summer and bought a sealed calendar of Provence. Upon opening it I found the quality of the photographs early subpar and even ugly. So since I love the Middle East and the history I searched for something interesting and found this calendar. It is gorgeous. Very good quality photos and ancient phrases. I am very pleased with my purchase.

It's a beautiful calendar but why is it still being sold in 2019? I bought this by accident. And now I'm doubling down on my mistake by just relabeling the days of the week, but... it's not optimal obviously! :P I only buy these calendars for the hijri dates and that's gonna be all wrong. Like seriously what's the point of still selling this? Figured I'd leave this review just in case it might tip off another idiot like myself. :)

Beautiful pictures, well-made calendar, excellent overall. I look forward to these every year. The only improvement I could suggest would be a little more info on the pictures, since I always want to know where they were taken and maybe where I can find them again, and maybe the inclusion of more holidays.

Assalaamualaikum,The calendars are clean, serene and beautiful. I have been purchasing them every year since 2010.Are you InshaAllah publishing 2018 calendars soon? Thanks,Irfan

I love these calendars, perfect in almost every way: beautiful photos, inspiring quotes, hijri dates and months, major world holidays. I buy several every year for our family and for gifts. But if only they were made available before the end of the year, that would be perfection!

Kind of disappointed that the calendar's imagery was practically devoid of structures aligned Islam

Excellent photographs as always

Absolutely gorgeous!

Summary: "Cursed be my intellect, affluence, and robust life experiences because there may never be someone so exceptional as to live up to my image of myself."This one book is many books. It is a remarkable recollection of a young life in Australia. Then, in one of the nine chapters, it takes on a literary bent with brilliant and entertaining use of language. Often, it devolves into segments of self-pity as well as loathing toward others. Does that make it a psychological thriller, a mystery, or a narcissistic treatise? Discuss amongst yourselves and support your ideas, as the scholarly Jill Ker Conway probably charged her students and peers over the years.Psychologically, the reader is presented a person who, through her twenties, couldn't be bothered to hold any work position for any length of time. Whether in law, political administration, fashion, education, or simpler tasks, some aspect of that work was beyond her tolerance. Such attitude is at least partly owed to the affluence that did not require her to work, but that is rarely raised as a factor. The thrilling aspect of the psychological spaghetti in these pages is the roller coaster of angst poured out by the author, with the reader along for the ride. There is family, social, climate, political, historical, and enough other kinds of angst to fill a world's fair. That may be interesting (the angst or the fair), but one tires from a non-stop intake of it.Mysteriously, we learn little depth about any characters surrounding the author other than her father during her astounding telling of early years on the Australian prairie, and of her mother as the anchor (with both good and bad meanings inferred) of her life. There are rarely more than brief mentions of others and name-dropping lists; nary a vignette to develop surrounding characters.I relished the onsetting story set in the unfamiliar Antipodal pastoral land to which the first four chapters were devoted. I was thrilled by bits of artfully-crafted phrasing through that section, which then flourished in most of chapter five and made me feel I was on a journey through life that was discovering literary potential just as it might have evolved for the young lass as her life shifted toward education.Yet by the end of chapter five to the final pages, the clarion call was that of the prototypical picture of the opera singer in preparation for a performance: "Me, me, me; Me, Me, Me!; Me, Me, ME!!" There was sound and fury but too little substance and story to mold a truly interesting tale despite the litany of subject matter that was mentioned. Many readers will enjoy this exploration of soul by commentary. The author presents herself as an interesting character. I might have enjoyed the effort had there been more introspection and less outwardly-focused criticism. There were times when I was ready to recommend this work to a teenage relative in the United States, that she might appreciate another kind of life in another part of the world, presented by someone of intellect. Such desire was not there by the end of the book.

I knew nothing about Jil Ker Conway until I heard an old interview with her on NPR shortly after she died, but it was enough to intrigue me. This first memoir of hers - I believe there are three - takes us up to the point where she leaves Australia and the clutches of her controlling mother. For me the first half of the book, her time on a desolate sheep farm in the outback, is the most intriguing section. The lengthy opening description of the outback is quite unlike anything I have ever come across and opened my mind to her reoccurring theme that Australia's fascination with English Christian culture was ridiculously out of place: "It is hard to imagine a kookaburra feeding St. Jerome or accompanying St. Francis. They belong to a physical and spiritual landscape which is outside the imagination of the Christian West."

Jill Ker Conway’s autobiography, “The Road From Coorain”, is a beautifully written memoir. The flow of the narrative and the broad vocabulary used throughout the book are exquisite. Although the impact of her life story is sometimes slowed by her mother's wants and needs, these experiences helped shape Conway and, as such, are an integral part of her story.Detailing her life growing up in the Australian outback during the second third of the twentieth century, Conway is able to draw the reader into that era. The beauty of the landscape and the harsh reality of the elements, the economic cycles, and the psychological impact on both men and women of these influences are vividly described. The elitism and the class differences between landed individuals and those who managed or worked on the stations become evident as the Conway family’s fortunes roller coaster between wealth and economic hardship.Societal attitudes toward women’s roles and acceptable occupations could have discouraged Conway from ever progressing. However, Jill Ker Conway’s intellectual strength, coupled with her work ethic, propelled her beyond those roles accepted and available to women in the mid-twentieth century to becoming a university professor and eventually president of Smith College.Today’s young women may view much of “The Road From Coorain” as ancient history. Women who came of age in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s may remember or may have experienced situations similar to those Conway encountered. All will be inspired by and amazed at Jill Ker Conway’s life and accomplishments.

This book, The Road from Coorain, was a great fit for me as I too grew up on a sheep ranch and made a life off the ranch. The experience of growing up on the ranch affected the remainder of my life as growing up on a sheep station in Australia did the author. The isolation brought independence and inventiveness. The writing is descriptive and brings you to the scene--I could smell the odor of the lanolin at shearing time!

This is a wondrously honest, thoughtful and intelligent work. Read it. You will ask yourself questions that seem fated to be asked. You'll grow in thought and maturity.

When I finally got around to reading this book I really enjoyed it. I had assumed it would be an entertaining childhood story of life on a sheep station in Australia, but it was so much more. I should have known a woman of such achievement would have written an interesting, thought-provoking story. She not only shared her struggle as a woman in a male-dominated profession, but also a look inside the attitudes of the typical educated Australian in that era. This one is a keeper.

I purchased this book along with another to start the suggestion of going potty for my two year old. I know that all kids train at their own pace, but there's no harm in a little nudge. This story is super cute in that duck messes up several times before he gets that he's supposed to go in the potty. On the fourth try, he makes it and he's a big duck now! It's simple, sweet, and encouraging. I will be purchasing the books in this series.

My two year old loves ducks! They are her favorite animal so needless to say, she loves this book! It's easy for her to remember the words and repeat them when we read the story together. It has also helped her some with potty training as it helps her understand the concept of the "potty chair" and the difference between "poop" and "pee". Overall it's a cute story when starting a toddler on the potty training journey.

Such an easy read and my daughter loves it. We had the Elmo potty book which is longer and has flaps, but she likes this one just as much. She love pointing out and saying “uh oh” when duck has accidents and gets really happy for him when he goes potty like a big duck. Definitely worth it to start getting littles interested in using the potty.

This book served it's purpose as a time spender while we waited for any action from our daughter as she learned to use the toilet. Very cute illustrations and the simple story is on theme with a duck having accidents and finding success on the potty.

We originally read this book at the library. My daughter loved it so much I purchased it for home. It's cute and we both love reading it. It would also work for either a boy or girl.

I LOVE several of the other books by this author in this series (Pony, Tiger) but this one has too negative of a feel to it. Might be more appropriate for an older child when the parent is fed up and means business about potty training but not appropriate for a little one first expressing interest in toilet training.

My son totally loves this book, he thinks it's hilarious. They do joke about missing the toilet and peeing on the floor, just FYI in case you want only serious potty learning material. (But maybe we are just too silly when we read it...) It begins with "no more diapers duck" and ends with him successfully peeing like a "big duck now". Cute story, we like it.

We loved Thumbs Up Brown Bear for trying to help our daughter stop sucking her thumb. This book doesn't really offer any sort of potty training help.

Any book that my kid loves and that I don't get sick of reading is good for me. Dahl does a great job on all of his books. This one is short and sweet. And my kid loves to see the rouge poop on one of the pages.

Have you ever looked at zBrush and that thought, Oh my God! Look at all those buttons! How the heck am I going to learn that? Is there an inner debate inside your mind deciding if alternate 3d modeling software package would be easier to learn? Like you I once stood in your shoes and I didn’t have this book to broker my curiosity, decisions all together to become one with simple to learn concepts introduced in Beginner’s Guide To zBrush.Beginner’s Guide To zBrush gently introduces you to zBrush showing you the philosophy of why zBrush is zBrush and unlike any other 3d modeling application on the market. Afterwards the book shows simple concepts of 3d modeling how those concepts apply zBrush functionality such as Dynamesh, primitives, subtools, Decimation master and zRemesher. The book delves into how to use the transpose line and move your model inside the document. The book delves into commonly used brushes and zModeler. It covers this information gently and in layers so that what you read before is foundation for what you read later. The book doesn’t overload you with information but gives you enough to learn and spike your curiosity to know more. Then the book offers you 3 projects to follow along covering organic modelling, mixed surface modelling and hard surface modelling. The best thing about these projects is that you will use the skills and concepts taught in the previous chapters so there is no fumbling around about functionality not covered in the book. In the end you will have the foundation and confidence to go further into zBrush and desire to learn more. After I read this book, I thought to myself, this is awesome book for anyone looking at zBrush for the first time or anyone who may have tinkered with zBrush and felt overwhelmed. If that’s you, then I highly recommend Beginner’s Guide To zBrush.

As someone who has worked with and taught Zbrush in the high school classroom for the past several years I can say this is the best book I have come across and I have purchased nearly every book on Zbrush I can find. There are many books on Zbrush that are wonderful to have but this one does the best job at showing someone how to get started. Another must have for any 3-D artist who is familiar with 3Dtotal. They have released some of the best books I have in my collection.

Best Zbrush beginner guide ever in my opinion. Actually got somewhere with this one. Sensible progression without over-whelming you with every detail of the interface. Adds as you progress, instead of bombing you with every feature way to early, which is super boring and not productive. I mean unless someone comes out with a nice Keyboard overlay or something, why do all these trainers think that you should screw around with tweaking one of the most complex interfaces in software history before you learn it's nuances "as is". You end up "cocking" it all up before you get started which is so lame and so typical of these tutorials usually. This one will get you rolling far faster than most. Start with "factory" settings to learn. Change your interface around in 10 months or so. Pixologix genius does have a reset to original at least!!! Nice! You'll use it 100 times with other books to try to figure out what you are supposed to be looking at!

I love it! The book is enticing and easy to follow. Zbrush is a hard software to get around but at least this book gives us steps and workflows as in a recipe while explaining how the tools work and the overall structure. I was looking for a beginners guide for some time and also watched tutorials online but stuff didn't stick. While I am reading the book I am filling the page's edges with postnotes with important key combos or steps as a reminder because is a lot to swallow at first. I prefer this method because I can find things quickly. So, overall if you are a complete beginner I would recommend this book, it is nicely designed, updated and affordable.

This book is amazing! I tried learning Zbrush from tutorial videos but they were all over the place and assumed I knew more about cg than I already did. This book teaches a beginner to both CG and ZBRUSH the basics of both the program and how to use it. If you buy this book and take the lessons slowly, you are guaranteed to learn the core of this program.

I have just started the book and finding it very informative and pleased with it thus far

This by far is one of my favorite books by far on zbrush! 3D total always does a great job with their books with easy to understand tutorials with plenty of pictures that illustrate the instruction. This book is especially shows some of the new tools in the latest version of Zbrush.

It's one of the best zbrush learning books I have ever read. The steps are easy to follow and it's quite straight forward, so if you wish to learn zbrush this is the book for you

From Publishers Weekly

Poet and National Public Radio commentator Codrescu ( Belligerence ) was born in Romania, left as a teenager and returned to observe the shocks and joys of revolution from December 1989 to January 1991. This report of his homecoming, jubilation and disenchantment makes an excellent companion volume to Codrescu's early memoir, The Life and Times of an Involuntary Genius . The first book was a lyric portrait of the artist as a raffish would-be poet in rural Transylvania; the one in hand is an equally sly but more worldly meditation on politics and personal history. The author opens on a note of sobriety, recounting the apparent end of despotism. The remainder of the book bears a more individual imprint, as Codrescu revisits scenes from his past, tries to look up old friends and offers thoughts on "cultural genocide." His outlook is summed up with the words, "I have never been able to abide either authority or bureaucrats. That is why I'm a poet." And thus, he finds enough still to rail against in Romania, questioning the veracity of the revolution itself as a series of "staged media events" possibly brought about by an elite conspiracy. From Library Journal

Codrescu has succeeded at a disconcerting task: writing a delightful book about a harrowing subject. After leaving Romania in his late teens and pursuing careers in the United States in poetry, academia, and journalism, Codrescu, with an assignment from National Public Radio, hurried back to revolutionary Romania at Christmas 1989. In this limpid and lively account that both chronicles the changes that have taken place and recollects his own past, Codrescu brings a fine attentiveness to the common folk he encounters: travelers on the train, hotel porters and cabbies, students and policemen. He describes with skepticism the "game of mirrors" played by the revolutionaries (the apparent new good guys) and the terrorists (ostensibly the old bad guys). Wit and irony color nicely his observations on political society and, by extension, human nature. For an immediate and personal experience of the recent Romanian turmoil, this is a real tour de force. Recommended for public libraries.- James B. Street, Santa Cruz P.L., Cal.Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

A most entertaining, witty, colorful, yet intelligent, articulate, and realistic account of the 1989 Romanian Anti-Communist Revolution. I highly recommend this book to anyone with the sligthest interest in the topic.

Since I am going to Romania next week I wanted to read some background information and got this book. It is really enlightening and fit the bill for me.

When I visited Romania for a month in 1979, I saw a beautiful green land of geese and flowering apple trees, ghostly old Transylvanian hill towns where each charmingly-warped house had eyes. Ham, cheese, mamaliga (polenta) and tsuica marked my days and the warm reception by Romanian friends gave me memories forever. But even then, before the Dracula-Leader went totally bonkers, Romania bore Orwellian overtones. Charades ruled the roost. Bookstores sold stuff that nobody wanted to read. Shoe stores sold footwear that nobody wanted to buy. The news wasn't new. "Friendship with all countries" meant that everyone was suspect. The gypsies lived in junkyards on real desolation rows. Pollution covered the territory of a `people's republic'. How glad I was that I had not been born Romanian. When, over ten years later, the "Romanian Revolution" occurred, I was both glad (Dracula had met his silver bullet) and horrified, when I heard that perhaps 60,000 people had been killed.Andrei Codrescu, a Romanian exile in the USA, felt a great burst of hope. His country would get out from under at last. He rushed, full of memories and dreams, back to Romania with an National Public Radio team. THE HOLE IN THE FLAG is the poetic, humorous, well-paced memoir of what he found, how he'd left it, with bits on adjusting in America, his old classmates, and his family. At first the reader shares all the stories, the rumors, the excitement, the sounds of battle. Later, in cooler times, Codrescu, like the rest of the world (or those who paid attention), realized that he'd been had. The charades had not stopped. Romania had gone through yet another one. Was it a revolution ? How many had actually died and who had killed them ? Who were the new leaders ? How did the leader die ? What was Russia's role in all this ? When I returned to Romania in 1996, my friends, now deeply disillusioned, raised all these questions and supplied a few depressing answers. With both eyes open and equipped by Romanian life with a large supply of cynicism, Codrescu re-writes the story of the "Revolution" in the latter half of his book. This is top reporting, top writing. Only a poet could write about Ceausescu's Romania and the state of mind it created, because words might fail anyone else. I could easily give the book five stars for writing, but have given it four because, sadly, it is dated now. Perhaps readers will not find the events so relevant, but as a look at human nature, it will never go out of style. I doubt if Bob Dylan had ever seen or thought about Romania, but to quote him is to sum up the feeling you'll get from THE HOLE IN THE FLAG."Now at midnight, all the agents and the superhuman crewCome out and round up everyone that knows more than they do.They they bring them to the factory where the heart-attack machineIs strapped across their shoulders and then the kerosene,Is brought down from the castles by insurance men who goCheck to see that nobody is escaping from Desolation Row." *with one minor change

It was about 2.25 am in the morning when I finished Codresacu's riveting memoir The Hole in the Flag which I found poignant, fey, hopeful and insightful. Sometimes I read a book which demands that it be devoured voraciously and this book falls into that category. For me, the Romanian revolution is still a cause of some mystification, but it is clear that it was more orchestration than spontaneous uprising. The current controversy with Mircea Dinescu and the debate over the availability of Securitate files, many of which have been pilfered and doctored no doubt. I found my discussions with locals in 2001interesting but wondered whether the divisiveness was a smoke screen yet again. Codrescu's is a reflective and analytical look at Romania just after the Revolution, and his own struggle to comprehend and make sense of the maelstrom that followed is one of the strengths of the work. At turns, banal, burlesque, and brilliant the book is skilfully written and will appeal as much to the general reader as it does to the Romanianists. I heartily recommend this book.

Review

"For a biographer, there's a lot to untangle. Alan Walker does so brilliantly in Fryderyk Chopin: A Life and Times, a magisterial portrait . . . A polyphonic work that elegantly interweaves multiple strands." --Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, The New York Times Book Review"An ideal composer biography should combine several qualities: a deep knowledge of the artist’s life and milieu, fortified by a reexamination of all available sources; an intimate understanding of the composer’s personality (and, when possible, some affection for it, too); and an ability to speak of the creative work in a manner that will edify both scholars and the general public, and take us all back to the music. Alan Walker’s Fryderyk Chopin: A Life and Times manages this hat trick very well indeed . . . This is now the best biography of Chopin ― meticulous, scholarly and well-told." --Tim Page, The Washington Post"There is more than enough for everyone at this literary feast, and come awards time, it’s likely you’ll see this book short-listed for one of the top literary biographies of the year . . . Walker’s narrative style reflects the very music of his subject: He has a light, delicate touch when making apt inferences, and a soft and rather ornate style when providing descriptions of the artist . . . Walker remains faithful to his subject, which only 10 years of extensive research into vast archives of primary source material could manifest." --Richard Horan, Christian Science Monitor"At last, the definitive biography of Chopin has arrived. This substantial new study is a masterpiece, indispensable to specialists and general music lovers alike. It overflows with revelatory information, deft characterisation and pertinent, readable explorations of the music. All this is set against a minutely detailed depiction of his world. Walker’s style is elegant, literary and empathetic, while his unfailing love for the music shines from every page." --Sunday Times (U.K.)"Thorough and authoritative . . . Walker [writes] with the narrative expertise one would expect of the masterly biographer of Liszt . . . Walker is brilliant on piano technique and its musical consequences. These passages are like talk of pigment and brushstrokes in a book about painting: technical in a sense yet free of jargon, easily understood, even perhaps by someone who has never laid hand on a piano keyboard." --Stephen Walsh, The Guardian"Absorbing . . . Walker integrates [many] different aspects into an entirely convincing entity. It's a measure of Walker's achievement that even in such a lengthy book, he keeps the reader engaged, presenting accessible and illuminating comments backed up with the full weight of scholarly authority." --Erik Levi, BBC Music (five stars)"[Alan Walker has] shed new light on many aspects of Chopin's life and cleared away a thicket of myths . . . Scrupulous as it is, this monumental biography is deeply engaging and enjoyable." --The Economist"An informative and exceptionally engaging read." --James F. Penrose, The New Criterion "Not one paragraph of this meticulously researched and often poignant account is wasted."--Andrew Moravcsik, Foreign Affairs"A real landmark. For the 'casual' music-lover it contains peerless writing; for the scholar, scotched myths and startling discoveries; and for the musician, insights galore . . . Walker leaves no stone unturned in his search for the truth about Chopin's life. Full of vivid detail, it is a perceptive chronicle through which one seems to live the composer's life alongside him . . . [Fryderyk Chopin] is the most important biography of Chopin in years and will be treasured by musicians and music-lovers as the definitive life for many more." --Jessica Duchen, Sunday Times (U.K.)"Alan Walker has produced the most comprehensive biography and musical analysis to date on Poland's most famous musician and composer . . . Highly readable and engaging . . . [Fryderyk Chopin] brings to life one of the 19th century's and Poland's most beloved, legendary, and celebrated artists. It deserves a place of merit at every university, music, and school library." --Carol Katz, New York Journal of Books"[An] expansive, authoritative biography . . . Packed with information and insightful analyses of Chopin’s major works that will interest professional musicians, and even nonspecialists will be entranced by [Alan] Walker’s piquant storytelling and graceful prose." ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"A sensitively discerning examination of a 19th-century superstar . . . a magnificent, elegantly written biography . . . An absorbing biography unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon." ―Kirkus (starred review)"Walker, whose writing is as limpid and engaging as his subject’s music, punctuates a rich texture of biography and history with discussions of Chopin’s technical and compositional innovations and distinctions that neatly show why he is so highly regarded . . . Informed by the latest discoveries about the composer, Walker’sbiography is a towering and beautiful achievement." ―Booklist (starred review)“[Fryderyk Chopin] is sure to become the definitive biography on the great composer . . . General readers should find this accessible as well as engrossing." ―Library Journal (starred review)“Adopting the same combination of broad perspective, wealth of telling detail, and musical expertise that he brought to his classic biography of Franz Liszt, Alan Walker has now produced a vast work on Fryderyk Chopin that is likely to remain the most important account of the great Polish master’s life for a long time to come. Walker vividly recounts Chopin’s happy childhood and youth in Warsaw, his unfortunate but artistically prolific adult life in exile from his native country, his loves, and his losing battle with the tuberculosis that killed him at the age of thirty-nine. The book also delves deeply into Chopin’s music. A must for musicians and music-lovers alike.” ―Harvey Sachs, author of Toscanini: Musician of Conscience

First, a confession. Almost each time I play the piano, Chopin is an inseparable part of the menu. His piano pieces are always fresh ; you can play most of his pieces an endless number of times, and still discover new things in them. This new biography of Chopiin's life and his times is a great pleasure to read. This is so because Alan Walker has invested in it 10 years of research and writing, and , like many of his previously published volumes on Liszt, this volume can already be called a classic.Heine, from whom I quoted partially the title for this review, called Chopin "the Raphael of the piano", adding that ...."whenever he plays I forget all other masters of the instrument , or mere skill, and sink into the sweet abyss of his music, into the melancholy rapture of his exquisite and profound creations".What distinguished Chopin from other acrobats of the piano was his lack of interest in technique as an end in itself. Hebelonged to no school , he subscribed to no dogma. Everything he knew about piano playing he had discovered for himself. It was he who broke new ground , creating a new series of piano pieces that have dominated the repertory ever since. Chopin, in short, created a new world for the piano. The author discusses in a vast panoramic style many sides of Chopin's life such as his happy childhood and youth in Poland, his recitals in Europe, his years in exile in Paris, his complicated relationship with George Sand and her children ,the year when Chopin spent in Majorca creating the famous 24 preludes, his short visit to London, the special way in which Chopin recommended to use and play his piano pieces, contradicting many advices given by his contemporaries, his break-up with Sand and the reasons for it, his many illnesses and his prolonged battle with tuberculosis as well as his death and its aftermath. In addition, there are numerous examples of musical pieces explained in detail by the author. Chopin could improvise on any piano. There are also many photos pertaining to his friends and places he lived in, an appendix, in which there appears a questionnaire of Liszt concerning the life of Chopin ( from November, 1849), and a general catalogue of Chopin's works.Living together with George Sand was not always easy for him, yet this was his most productive period of his short life- a life cut short at the age of 39. Chopin's funeral is described in a special chapter. It took place in the Madeleine Church in Paris, where -according to his wish- Mozart's Requiem was played. After carrying out an autopsy, one of his doctors removed Chopin's heart and -preserved in a jar containing alcohol- it was transferred to Warsaw by his sister. The story about his heart after having being brought to Poland merits in itself a separate chapter, since it had a tumultuous fate especially during and after World War Two.Unfortunately, George Sand burnt all the ten-year-old correpondence between her and Chopin. And, despite Chopin's wishes to burn his last compositions, one of his sisters had decided to publish them. This biography, which is packed with a lot of information and insightful analyses of Chopin's major works , and which supplies a great historical background of the events that happened before, during and after Chopin's death, is a must for every pianist, music lover and cultured man everywhere. In fact, it is deeply researched and highly readable and sometimes the reader might think he is reading a first-rate novel. I also name it the best biography of the year for 2018 !

Review of Walker’s "Fryderyk Chopin" by Paul F. RossAlan Walker, Professor Emeritus at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, completed his 700+ page biography of Chopin in 2017 and his copyright is dated 2018. I ordered my copy from Amazon and, after a long wait for its publication, my copy arrived on 18 October 2018. The Economist published its review in the issue of 10-16 November 2018 (p 81-82) saying “Scrupulous as it is, this monumental biography is deeply engaging and enjoyable.” Chopin, who was born in Poland in 1810 and died in France in 1849, was a self-taught pianist from age_____________________________________________________________________________________________Walker, Alan Fryderyk Chopin: A life and times 2018, Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, New York NY, xxxi + 729 pages_____________________________________________________________________________________________six with some help from his mother, a singer and perhaps an amateur pianist. Chopin began studying composition at the Warsaw Conservatory at age sixteen where his teacher, Jozef Elsner, became Chopin’s mentor and a lifelong influence.Chopin left Poland and Warsaw in 1830 at age twenty to avoid the political uproar as Poland sought to escape the domination of Russia. Chopin never returned to his homeland. Intending to go to Italy, he ended instead in Paris. In 1836 Chopin met George Sand who became his lover, then as Chopin’s health became marginal, his nurse. Their relationship soured in 1847 over issues Chopin had with Sand about Sand’s treatment of Sand’s daughter (by Liszt, before meeting Chopin), and Chopin saw Sand only once between their separation and Chopin’s death in 1849.Chopin lived at a time when Liszt and other prominent pianist-concertizers toured Europe, played to large audiences in concert halls, and were lionized for their technical brilliance and powerful sound that filled concert halls. Chopin played music of his own composition, played much more softly, and was admired by the piano cognizant for his touch and the variety of sound produced by Chopin. Chopin did not play huge public concerts because his interpretations did not produce sound loud enough to fill music halls. Walker presents a chapter describing how Chopin’s touch and his fingering is different from that taught by Czerny and the great pianists of Chopin’s day.Walker spends pages describing a period of Chopin’s life, then the next pages describing the music that Chopin composed during that period. Life, music – life, music. This is the pattern used by Swafford in his biography of Beethoven and by Wiley in his biography of Tchaikovsky. Walker’s biography is more successful in conveying the “life” experiences for Chopin than Swafford and Wiley have been in writing engaging stories about their composers lives.Copyright © 2018 by Paul F.
