Well, the book is advertised as the best of series 1-5, but on practice it's repetition over repetition - same things repeated twice or even more times. There are some good advice, but nothing you cannot read/watch in any tutorial for beginners online. The part I liked most was real life settings for pictures taken. They allow you to compare what you do with what pros do. An OK reading, not superb.

This is a fine book, but it really only wets one's appetite for the real books from which these chapters are drawn. The format--basically one concept or technique per page--limits the depth on any specific topic, but it is still an interesting read.

Well, even though he sold his soul to Canon, I have every book in this series and love them all. Because I only get out shooting occasionally, I was carrying the first two books and the recipe book in my camera bag. With this book, I was able to replace the other three and shed about 10 lbs of weight. I loved it so much I downloaded it onto my iPad, too, using the Kindle app. Highly recommend this and all his books!

Scott Kelby has written several books such as this one, however this one is composed of all the important section from his previous books. I love it and find myself referring to it often. There are many details on exactly how he achieved a particular shot. Scott, thanks for the tips!

This book is not for beginners. As the tips and suggestions are not explained, but rather just told with the assumption you already know your camera.

Scott Kelby is my Yoda. Plain and simple. He is the Jedi master of photography. I have been learning from him for years and I have most of his books on Photoshop and Lightroom. I'm always learning something new, and if I ever have a question, his website usually has the answers.

Lots of great information for you to get the best photography you can with your camera. Easy to understand.

Easy to read, easy to understand.

CJ's had a lot of tragedy in her life- her parents, her brother, and now her boss all died too soon. Her boss, Congressman Snapper Lewis, didn't really commit suicide, did he? CJ pokes around but then realizes that she's gotten too close to an uncomfortable truth. So, perhaps wisely, perhaps not, she takes off and moves to a small coastal town. Small towns are good places to hide, until they aren't. This is romantic suspense so keep your eye on her love interest- a charter boat captain. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. This is popcorn reading: you might guess the end and you might not but it's a fun time.

Loaded with twists and turns. CJ Jansen is a administrative assistant for a powerful congressman. A congressman with secrets. When he is found dead from an apparent suicide CJ finds herself in danger.Dawn Ruby-BbookGypsyNovels N LatteHudson Valley NY

I like Fern Michael's as an author. But I also find that I either love the books that she has written or they fall in the middle for me. What I mean is that while I don't hate them they are just okay. That's where this one fell for me. Even though CJ was a good enough main character and her deceased brother's long- time lover Colin was good also. They had each others backs even after her brother "Kick" died. Colin is there for her once again as she pulls him into the mystery that SHE gets pulled into. There was plenty of mystery, action and danger to the story. But sad to say it just really didn't grab me. Even with the twists and turns I still wish I had liked it more.It has a good Epilogue with one more unexpected twist in that part as well.I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own

Suspenseful, funny, with great character and story development. Being a big fan of Fern Michaels pays off every time.

C. J. works as an aide for a Congressman. When her boss commits suicide she is convinced it has to be murder. Her investigation leads her down a dangerous and emotional path. This book held my interest but it wasn’t a 4* book. It had suspense, romance, some laugh out loud humor, and a few twists. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

Review

"One of the most beautiful and comprehensive retrospectives on the impact of queer art throughout history."—OUT Online"[A] comprehensive and definitive survey of artworks that have constructed, contested, or otherwise responded to alternative forms of sexuality... [has] an accessible, authoritative voice, with a wealth of rarely-seen imagery."—Aspire: Design and Home Magazine"A fascinating mix of work and approaches, and draws out the often hidden and subversive nature of queer art that came from necessity thanks to the persecution of the LGBTQ+ people through history and still in many places today... A superb book, not only does it provide a fascinating insight into a genre that was for so long hidden or overlooked, but the unique culture that created it. The importance of this book is as much in it's existence as it is due to it's contents. It's an insight into a history and art that too many of us are unaware of, even as members of the LGBT community."—LondonLampost.com

It's an incredible and much-needed book on past and present queer art. The amazon editorial reviews are on the nose. Yes, it's that good. This can be described as a true "survey" and not a measly selection of 20-30 artists. Starts with two critical essays by Richard Meyer and Catherine Lord and then the art is split into seven different sections beginning in 1885 all the way up to the present. Additional critical text and documents are found in the last part of the book, which mirrors the chronological sequence of the previous seven sections, and ends with artist biographies. If you're not excited already, you should be. Because the book is also gorgeous. Great design, beautiful reproductions. Do yourself a favor and also check out the magnificent work of Richard Meyer. Although more focused, his book Outlaw Representation has been a staple in my library and in my research.

This is by far the most thorough overview of queer art-making practice in the past century. A richly visual and beautifully designed coffee table book, with also the added bonus that it's a BRILLIANT read. I took this big book to bed and read it cover to cover! A must have for anyone interested in thought provoking texts & images on contemporary art/artists.

Its simply OK

Nice.

Real Big Deal.. its all there

A very comprehensive book both pictorially and information wise.

I have never come across a book that attempts to be so thorough in terms of scholarly writing while also contain a great deal of visual content. This book would be both at home on a coffee table as it would in a collection of art theory texts. Excellent work.

It is the best overview till now. The texts are a very important addition to the visual material. And, very well designed too. Is a must for every gay man and woman.

The review of the Kindle Version of the Imitation of Christ, specifically TRANSLATED BY REV. WILLIAM BENHAM, DIGIBOOKS PUBLISHING, is written in the old English. If you prefer your bible translation as the King James Version, then this is the version for you. If you prefer a different translation, say NIV, or the New King James 2016 Version, then this is NOT FOR YOU. I do recognize that subtle but sometimes important differences can be had between translations, but for me, I do like the DOVER THRIFT VERSION.Amazon is NOT clear on the version of the book you are purchasing; when on the DOVER VERSION in amazon, purchases made in the paperback mode provide the specific version I wanted; but also wanting the Kindle version it showed it was available in that version. However, once you choose the Kindle version, it brings you to another screen where the cover is different. I did no pick up that subtlety initially and purchased via ebook what I though I purchased in paperback form. They should not show the Dover Version with a choice of Kindle version unless the Dover Version is what is being delivered to my Kindle. BAD AMAZON!

I've read only the first 30%. The majority of the book is do's and dont's about how to be a better person. That would ordinarily bore me but this list is surprisingly fresh and contains a number of ideas that go beyond the obvious. It's not written from a dogmatic 'do this or God will punish you' point of view. Instead it's more like 'you'll go deeper in your meditation practice if you avoid these pitfalls'.The benefit of reading it is not so much that I learn new information but that it seems to work on the reader's mind in a subtle way, so that if one opens the book feeling agitated about the details of his or her complicated life, after a chapter or two one is reminded that life is something deeper than those trivial details. After twenty minutes of reading I often forget completely whatever thought was troubling me and feel calmer and more clearly motivated to focus on what really matters in life and let everything else take its own natural course. The author makes occasional mention of a secret level of spiritual instruction that is given to only a select few. Although it's interesting to speculate about what type of instruction the author refers to, don't hope for this book to divulge too much about its contents. The author stays focused on the main topic of how to structure ones outer life to facilitate development of the inner life.

~A Carmelite Hermit/Priest once came upon me reading a copy of 'The Imitation of Christ' in the cloistered garden of the hermitage that I was living at temporarily. He sat beside me and looked at my book with a warm smile, he said "Always keep this book close to your heart, and you will never go astray". Since that day, it is rare for me to go anywhere without a well read copy of the Catholic Classic stuffed with care in my bag, and read a chapter or two every chance I get. It never gets 'old', and it's refreshing, penetrating words always "speak to me" in new and inviting ways, as if it were the first time reading that particular passage every time! I was very pleased to see these new leather zip-cover versions, as I've gone through a couple soft cover versions with daily wear and tear, in and out of the backpack, etc. There are two versions in these similar covers, two different translations by two seperate publishers. The one pictured here is my personal favorite, published by TAN, it is the same trusted and true old translation that is found in the beloved old 'Confraternity of the Precious Blood' versions.... that familiar little blue soft-covered version with stunning b&w detailed pictures to meditate upon as you read. This version was originally translated from Latin by Richard Challoner D.D., and is more true to the original translation. Though it is written in an older style of proper English, it is easy enough for most people to comprehend, and the older writing style has much artistic, poetic charm that is often times lost in some of the newer 'up-to-date' English translations. Remember, this is the second most translated and published book in history next to the Holy Bible! The other new leather zip-cover version available now looks nearly identical to this, but rather than a Cross on the front cover, it has a 'Chi Ro' design and omits the authors' name. This version, equally impressive, is put out by the Catholic Book Publishing Co., and is the same translation (edited by Clare L.Fitzpatrick) that is available in the small red hardcover version that is quite popular by the same publisher. This too is an excellent version, but the translation is much more modern and more readable by the everyday layperson, or anyone who wishes to hear this timeless wisdom in a more easily accessible version without the 'thee's, thou's, and shall's" of the aforementioned version. It's personal preference, example...first line of the TAN version = "He that followeth me, walketh not in darkness," ..... as opposed to the CBPC's version, "No one who follows Me will ever walk in darkness." (John 8:12). ~But, to be truly enlightened and touched by these timeless words of wisdom of the Spiritual Life, I reccommend buying both versions, and absorbing both as to get a better understanding of these holy and guiding words. There are those who may say that A' Kempis's writings are 'not for everyone', as most of his writings were written to give guidance to the young novitiates of his monastic order where he served as Novice Master for a time, but please do not let that turn you away from the holy and life changing power of his spiritually uplifting direction that still speaks to many today. If you have any call to any form of holiness, or just want to enhance and reinvigorate your daily spiritual life, there is no way that you can go wrong with Thomas A 'Kempis and this, his most well known and loved body of work.

A modern, elegant, and very readable translation of a 15th century masterpiece.Timely and deeply challenging, this book has stood the test of six centuries and remains a treasure of spiritual guidance. Intended especially for those in religious life, it remains useful and provocative to lay persons as well. One of its themes, the forsaking of the world for love of God, complements without contradicting the more recent spirituality of St. Josemaria Escriva, which highlights the importance of finding God in one's ordinary activities, "in the middle of the world". These two perspectives together offer much food for contemplation. The final section of "Imitation of Christ" deals with the Eucharist, and sheds light on the orthodox Catholic devotion which formed the author's faith.A must read for any Christian who wants to walk more closely to Christ.

About the Author

Manuel de la Torre has twice been recognized by Golf Magazine as one of the top 100 golf professionals in America. He is typically described as today’s leading authority on the ‘Swing Principles’ method of instruction developed by the legendary golf instructor Ernest Jones. Manuel de la Torre has been celebrated throughout his 50 year career as a passionate keeper of the golf instructional wisdom presented and made popular in the 1930s and 1940s by Ernest Jones. In fact, Manuel’s father. Angel de la Torre, himself the two-time Spanish Open golf champion, had met Ernest Jones at a tournament in England. When the two families settled in America Ernest Jones and Angel de la Torre became lifetime friends. Manuel literally grew up discussing the golf swing with his father and one of the games most celebrated instructors. These historical elements are presented in several meaningful appendices, including Manuel’s moving essay on the experience of leaving his homeland Spain as civil war broke out in 1936. Manuel de la Torre was head golf profesional at the Milwaukee Country Club from 1951 to 1996. Manuel continues to conduct seminars for teaching professionals at the local, state and national levels. He lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

This book is perfect for an amateur who wants to learn the game or improve and transform their game. Golf instruction today, because of how the pros are taught, has become more complicated for the amateur who is trying to learn on their own or can't afford a lot of lessons. Modern instruction has broken a simple golf swing into multiple positions requiring intense instruction and a huge amount of practice to learn and maintain. Manuel De La Torre teaches a basic method that is easy to learn and easy to perform. If you stick with it you will play better golf. You may not hit the ball 300 yards or spin the ball back 10 feet but you'll enjoy your golf more. I have gone from a 20 handicap to a 10.

I consider myself a student of golf, someone that studies the golf swing. I have over 60 golf books and countless DVD's and tapes. I don't necessarily read all this to change my swing but I enjoy reading about the golf swing. I can tell you there are many ways to swing the golf club. The more I know the more I realize how confusing it is and why people have so much problems with the swing. What I have learned through all this is that there are some swings more suited to one person and not to another. I spent 10 months of hard work trying to learn a flatter one plane swing. Even though I shot 78 with that swing I know it just wasn't suited to me. I am a more upright swinger, a two planer as Jim Hardy would call it. It feels more natural for me.It was really by accident that I got a hold of Manuel De La Torre's book. It caught my attention since he is basically a two planer, a more upright swinger. When I first read through the book skimming as I was going along I completely missed on how to swing the club. I had to go back again and look through the chapter index to find where it was. The whole section on the mechanics of the swing is very short, so short you might miss it like I did. Having been use to reading detailed descriptions on how to swing a golf club I was rather struck by how little he had to say. My first feeling was this book was a waste of my time. He spends, it seems, more time on grip than he does on how to swing the clubSo I went back and read that little section on swinging the club. Made some practice swings and within a very short time felt for the first time what I felt was the way a golf swing should feel like. It was too simple. The genius behind this swing is just that. It is so simple that for most people the simplicity will be very difficult to deal with. They will try and throw all kinds of previous ideas or make their body work differently because the swing really can't be that simple. The remarkable thing about how he gets you to swing is the swing adapts to you, you don't adapt to the swing. So every person will have a different swing but that swing is his or her swing and that is why it is so magical.I probably spent about 15 minutes practicing the swing in my living room and then read his entire book with out skiming this time. It is a simple read and goes by pretty quickly since he doesn't have a lot of detail you have to memorize. I went out to the golf range the next day but really not expecting a great deal. I often read a book and practice the swing in front of a mirror but find when you go and actually try and hit a ball it doesn't always translate like it should. My expectations were somewhat low but I made my first swing. It was a pull not bad but it was solid. My next one was also a pull then I remembered that section of faults but really it was just adhering to what little rules he had. My next shot was dead straight. I went from a 7 iron hitting all the way up to a driver. I was impressed, not by the way I was hitting but because it happened so fast. I felt confidence within a very short period and the swing felt like it was mine. My last swing change took 10 months of dedicated work and this one took one day most of it just reading the book. Now I know some and maybe quite a few are going to try this and feel it is worthless. After reading 60 books and having over a dozen golf instructors in my golfing career I can only tell you this is the simplest and easiest swing I have ever tried. It may be difficult to get that feel. I found it almost instantly but once you feel that swing you won't need another book or another golf instructor again.

I'll start by saying that I don't play full rounds of golf as much as I should. I go to the range more often. Almost anyone will tell you that you have to play the full game to get better, and I agree. Believe me, whenever I retire, this is the game I want to play. Not necessarily because I play well, but because I want to play well.In the search for a great golf swing, my room is literally full of piles of golf books, magazines, VHS tapes and DVD's. I also have been a subscriber to a number of online instructional websites. It would be unfair to say that any one of these did not do something to help my game. The problem is, it has taken me this long to realize that too much of this information, including some very conflicting swing theories, is a very bad thing!I am not sure where I first heard of Ernest Jones and his "Swing the Clubhead" book. I decided to give this book a read, and right away liked the simplicity of his approach. Yet somehow I could not translate his thoughts to my swing. When a heard that Manuel de la Torre is a "disciple" of this type a swing, as well as his very impressive playing and teaching background, I gave his book (and later his DVD) a shot. What I really like about his approach is again the simplicity. At times he compares the golf swing to other routine things we do without necessarily thinking. For example, when we throw a ball, we don't think of exactly where the hip, wrist or ankle are as we are making the throw. Granted there needs to be a good sense of the target when throwing a ball. The more you get used to throwing to the target, the better you will get, and in the process getting the FEEL of how to throw it without thinking about it. The same is true of the golf swing. If you read the other favorable reviews of this book, you will see that the keys are visualizing the overall SWING (NOT THE BALL) and taking into account some very simple mechanics to achieve the swing. His basis of the swing is the FULL swing, with the ball only "getting in the way" during the swing. If you are like me and have spent years hitting golf balls, that can be a tough concept to lock into. If you can get this, you are on your way. Manuel's approach is that by keeping the swing rather than the ball as the central thought, the other body parts will take care of themselves.Granted, like anything it takes some regular practice to get the right feel of this swing to be consistent. I have been using this approach for about 6 months, and I can at least say that my shots are a lot more accurate than they were before. Hopefully the better scores will follow. I have seen some improvement there too, but will know better when I start playing more. With this approach, I at least feel more confident when I do get out there. As a side note, to find a way to practice the golf swing more often, I bought some practice hitting mats and Birdie Balls. If you are not familiar with these, Birdie Balls when struck travel only about 40-60 yards. That way I can have these in my car and turn any given empty baseball field into my own personal driving range. The hitting mats are so you won't tear up the grass (and should keep you out of jail if the cops happen to be driving by). Make sure the mats are heavy enough so they will stay in pace as you are hitting them. I happen to use Real Feel mats. Overall this is a great way to keep your swing going if you can't get to the course or range. Give them a try!P.S. I started off giving this book 4 stars, but after rechecking the table of contents, I switched it to 5. With the possible exception of an in-depth discussion of golf equipment, this book (240 pages) is very comprehensive, including both the physical and mental aspects of the overall game. Definitely a solid book, and an excellent value!

Manuel de la Torre is the finest teacher and exemplar of the Earnest Jones "swing the club-head approach to golf. This book plus the DVD is critical to those who would learn or revamp their swing to follow the form of the great swingers of the past: Bobby Jones, Horton Smith, Sam Sneed, and hundreds of "swingers" from the Scottish Isles and England. If you played golf before be prepared to be challenged by what you have heard or think are the cardinal rules of golf. This is 'effortless golf' but does require you to re-think what you always thought were the basic methods of playing golf.Carroll Londoner

A friend recommended this book. His handicap went from 10 to 5 in 4 weeks. The last time we played he shot 71!!!Focus on the swing and not the results makes perfect sense. I’m going to re read a few sections. I think this way of thinking will help. Recommended.

Bought this for a new father. He loves the jokes! The illustrations are a little weird, but that just adds to the hilarity. And the reviews on the back of the book are priceless.

The cheesiest collection of jokes I've read in a long time. You'll groan while you're laughing.

Puns are the lowest form of humor. I laughed and laughed and memorize some for the grand children. Love it.

I enjoyed dad jokes just like the next guy and this one had many jokes I hadn’t heard before.

Funny

My husband loves this book. We just had a baby 7 months ago so he’s gotta start learning his jokes soon.

These are definitely "dad jokes," but most of them are fun and there are some new ones in the bunch.

No. Not funny. Not good dad jokes. Waste of money.

There is so much more to this story than you can get from the blurb. Jenna has been plundered emotionally by the death of her mother, her divorce from her cheating spouse and struggling through cancer alone. She's back home to settle the estate and decide whether to sell or keep her old home. Steve, her best friend and childhood sweetheart, shows up almost as soon as she hits town. She also runs into Jackson, the wild boy from school. Jackson's daughter is a hoot! The characters are well written, the beautiful town is itself a character in the book. There are themes of redemption, forgiveness, and grace . Several of the secondary characters would make great main characters if this becomes a series. I could not put the book down and fervently hope there will be more stories from Sandover Beach.

I loved this book, and not just because its setting reminds me so much of my favorite place - The Outer Banks in North Carolina. The writing is fantastic and sharp, the dialogue snappy and real. I found myself laughing out loud a few times because of the quips - I appreciate that St. Clair gives her characters a real sense of humor. I also appreciated that even though this is what’s considered a “sweet romance,” it dealt with some heavy, real situations and emotions. St. Clair doesn’t shy away from the hard things in life, and gives her characters depth of feeling and realness that I feel is lacking in this particular genre - all while managing to provide a great escape and beach read. I would have given it five stars but I don’t want Emma to get a big head. 😉

I adored Emma St. Clair's book, Cold Feet, Hot Summer. I had bought Sandover Beach Memories a while back and finally had time to read this weekend. I LOVED IT! This story carries you along as a reader. The characters become real right away and their relationships (with all the twists, turns, highs, and lows) are believable and engaging. You want certain people to be found out, others to be given the break they so desperately deserve, and all of this keeps you on your toes as a reader. Beyond being a simple romantic story about a woman returning to a beach town, this story contains life lessons woven into unexpected spots. You set the book down knowing you will miss Sandover and all the people you have come to know there. I totally recommend this book!

Jenna returns home to Sandover Beach, after her mother’s death, to decide if she’s going to sell the beach cottage or live in it. She has had a terrible year that she hasn’t told anyone about and she really feels at home back in Sandover. One of the first people she sees is Steve, her high school boyfriend. He continues to show up in the evenings, but he’s keeping secrets. We also meet Jackson, who used to be the schools’s biggest player, and Jenna still doesn’t like him. He’s keeping secrets too. Will Jenna find out each man’s secrets? How will they affect her decision or will they? No spoilers, so grab your copy and get ready to fall in love with Sandover Beach.

What a wonderful story by Emma St. Clair. It will touch your emotions in so many ways. There is sorrow, hurt, pain, grief, hope, and happiness. I really liked how two of the main characters turn to God and find each other. It makes you believe there is hope and love after an unfaithful marriage and cancer.

This was a read in a single day book. I think what struck me the most about this book, was how much the author knew about the character of people. Having gone through several different types of grief experiences and cleaning out a house for an estate, I thought there was great authenticity in the various ways the characters dealt with their struggles. The depth of her characters made the story come to life. Great story line. Superb characters. Must read!

I loved this book! The character development was authentic and with depth. The setting made me want to be there, even though I was fortunate to read it on the beach! Redeeming love, forgiveness, and romance with a touch of mystery. I look forward to reading the next book! Emma has a real gift for making clean romance very intriguing.

Have you ever wondered how some people can't buy a break and others seem to get everything handed to them even when they don't deserve it. You will find yourself totally engrossed in this story of loss, disillusionment, betrayal and self discovery. And let's not forget love.
