This novel was an interesting portrait of a man who falls in love, marries, has children, and then leaves for greener pastures. He is on his third wife when she is killed when struck by a bus. Was it an accident? Or did she did it on purpose?The story revolves around Adrian attempting to unravel the mystery of Maya's death. He thought they were happy and trying to have a baby. Was any of it true?Gradually, many secrets are revealed.While I didn't LOVE this book, I did like it a lot. I especially found it very interesting that all of Adrian's families and children are involved with on another even to the point of vacationing together. I've never seen that happen in real life!The mystery begins when Adrian decides to find a new home for Maya's cat and posts a note on a bulletin board at the post office. A woman answers the add (we first learn she watched him post the ad and she takes it with her) but ultimately decides not to adopt the cat. BUT...she leaves her phone at Adrian's apartment and he tries to find her.I did think the story weakened near the end and some details were not explained (if Maya left school at 16 how did she become a teacher at a posh girls' school?), but it moves along and is interesting.I guess the basic theme is "what goes around comes around." Adrian has a lot to learn.

I found this book to be very real and relatable. A man has recently married his third wife and is initially successful in believing that his children from both previous marriages are all on board and even happy for him. He has good relationships with both exes and is oblivious to how #3 is treated at tri-family gatherings and how she feels about being expected to just step in and fit into everyone's expectations. Lisa Jewell knows people and she writes real! I especially liked how she had his children convey how they felt about his decisions and choices. Realistic.

I really enjoyed this book. Lisa Jewell always does a good job explaining the motivations of her characters. Every book is interesting and unique. In The Third Wife, the husband naively thinks that everyone is fine with his decision to move on and start another family, not realizing how disappointing his behavior is to his children. They know he loves them, but, if he does, why isn't he satisfied with what he has? Things get out of hand and those he truly loves suffer most. I'd definitely recommend this book.

I really liked this book. It takes you on a journey through the inner workings of marriage, divorce, and death. Hearing how all members of the family dealt with their traumas kept me glued. The mystery of the third wife kept me enthralled as well. It's like a snowball effect and at the end it's like wow..... How can one man be so clueless? But I can see how a man the way they are wired (not all but most) could be. And of course what can happen when communication is non existent. Even the way we choose to see or believe things to make ourselves deal or feel better. I totally recommend this book for those who like a little mystery and like to peel the layers of people's psyches.....

Weak Characters...Especially the husband. Spoilers: He seemed to be a collector of wives and families and just wanted to jump from one family to the next, but also keeping everyone close by. Spoiled children. The end was terrible, even after finding out that his kids were sending the emails he took the blame and let them walk all over him. His poor third wife just seemed to be forgotten. Sad.

I read a ton and I have to say that "The Third Wife" is one of my favorites from the past twelve months. There's an element of mystery to it, which keeps you at the edge of your seat, but more importantly are the actual characters. Jewell does a perfect job of capturing the emotions of the five children Adrian has left behind from his previous two marriages as well as the range of emotions felt by the new wife, Maya. And she does a fabulous job covering Adrian himself, who isn't cruel or mean but rather selfish and immature, both of which have their lasting effects on all of his family. Highly recommend. About to binge on other Lisa Jewell books, as this was my first.

I kept turning these pages! I can't recall ever reading a book, that had my mind totally flip-flopping, with various turns of events. My preconceived notions of the likeable, main character, were out the window, as the book progressed. Very insightful, to say the least, with well drawn, memorable characters. It absorbed me to the end!

I first read Lisa Jewell's "The House We Grew Up In" and loved it. I had not read Jewell before but that book made me a big, big fan. This story, in my opinion, does not quite measure up to "House" but it comes very close. I read non-stop because I was so intrigued by the plot and wanted to get to the answers, all the while settling on, and then suddenly changing my theories of which character did what. Some may say that the story was not all that clever and that they were able to figure it out early on. Well, good for them. For me, the story worked beautifully and kept me guessing until almost the end. And isn't that the fun?

First, I think this book would benefit most by an update by the author that discussed the letter from Bohr which clearly implicated Heisenberg as attempting to develop a Nazi bomb and sought Bohr's aid, a letter that was released only a few years after the play was written.The play itself is gripping, though perhaps a bit repetitious, and I enjoyed reading it even more than viewing it in the theater where I think I missed some of the nuance of the text. It is a story of tragic and terrifying implication, and the author maintains an appropriate sense of tension and dread throughout. I don't know if it would appeal as much to a reader without at least some background in twentieth century physics and the seminal roles played by the characters of the play. I think it is important to have a sense of the greatness of the physics developed by the characters, and the state of excitement those developments engendered in the physics community of that time. In particular, Bohr's principal of complementarity is discussed at some length, but without any explication of its import, and as it is a difficult enough (even ephemeral, almost) an idea to begin to grasp, much of the attempt to resolve the conflict central to the play becomes quite murky.Nevertheless, I found it a wonderful play to read ( though I must admit to being an aficionado of the history of modern physics) which paints a fascinating picture of two of the greatest men in the history of science, grappling with the most horrifying implications of the genie they have helped release from the bottle.

COPENHAGEN is a play that welcomes a reading. The structure of pure dialogue between the physicists, Heisenberg, Bohr and Bohr's wife Margrethe( who represents the non-physicists in the audience) lends itself to the closer examination the written word gives us. Michael Frayn brilliantly imagines a moment frozen in time- Heisenberg arrives from Germany in 1941 to discuss something with his mentor, Bohr in occupied Copenhagen. Seizing upon this historical event and its mysterious circumstances, Frayn recreates the event from a variety of perspectives in pursuit of a greater truth. Was Heisenberg a hero, who kept the Nazi's from achieving the ultimate weapon, or a victim of his own carelessness? Reading the play, gives you the time to reflect upon how creatively Frayn frames each of his scenarios. The dialogue is never less than challenging, even while playing to the audience surrogate, Margrethe. Frayn uses these two great minds to introduce the audience into the realm of advanced physics and the moral ambiguities involved in the mixing of pure science with the nature of war. The forced civility between the two men emphasizes the underlying current of terror created by the Nazis rise to power and the oncoming dawn of an atomic age. Frayn does not offer any easy answers, to do so would be an insult to the wonderful work that has gone on before. The postscript alone is worth the price of the book for any fan of the play. It sets up the historical context for the play's creation and gives the reader a much greater understanding of where Frayn came up with many of the issues he examines in this work.

Frayn's play deals with Heisenberg's mysterious visit to his friend and mentor Bohr's home in Copenhagen. At the time, Heisenberg was working on the Nazi's atomic bomb project. No one really knows what the two scientists talked about. Frayn takes this to the next level by having his characters (the two scientists and Margrethe Bohr) not be sure either. The play incorporates the Uncertainty Principle into its plot. The characters aren't entirely sure what happened or what their motives were.Frayn did quite a bit of research on the subject, which works to the play's advantage. At the centre of the play is a discussion of whether Heisenberg went to Bohr for help to achieve the Nazi's goals or for help in warning the Allies. None of the characters are clear cut and all have flaws and virtues. The science never bogs down the play and is kept uncomplicated and understandable to common people. To me, it actually enhances the plot.

The idea for the play was just that, brillant. It is about a wartime meeting between the physicists Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg when Denmark was under German occupation. Margrethe Bohr, the third character, allowed the two men someone to play against. The characters are "talking ghosts". While based historical record, each character's thoughts were beautifully written based on what had been happening in the world in which they lived. It revealed the moral dilemma both men faced, the influence they had and how they handled the lifetime roles that they were given. I will look for the movie of the play.

An infrequently produced play about a meeting between Werner Heisenberg and Niels Bohr during WW II. There are copious notes so that you can follow what is historical and what is speculation. Fascinating cat and mouse game as each tries to determine how much the other knows about making an atomic bomb. Definitely helps appreciation of this play to know some undergraduate-level quantum physics.

Thought-provoking, funny, eerie and sad. It portrays the conflict of scientists' curiosity vs conscience, as shown in the relationship of two great physicists (and one's wife) in the lead-up to and aftermath of World War II- but unexpectedly, the debates occur among the characters after their deaths! Awesome.

I'll never forget his novel =The Russian Interpreter=. Nor will I ever forget =Copenhagen=, which does a masterful job of melding human drama with physics. Niels Bohr is, as we know, a very likeable figure, but Heisenberg is not; but Frayn manages to give both of them the contradictions dramatic personae need. The Afterword, I must say, is equally fascinating, Frayn tracing the path to his play and detailing some of the physics referred to in the play. Brilliant.

Why You Were Taken reviewI’m thoroughly enjoying this series! The prequel gave us a taste of what was possible from these characters and setting. Kirsten and Keke make a great team. They are both dedicated journalists and each has a history of being in dangerous situations. Set in a near future South Africa, showers & swimming pools are practically unheard of, the fertility rate has plummeted, and paper communications (like printed receipts, etc.) are practically unheard of. Yet tech has continued to progress. I loved this aspect of the book! Keke has a tattoo that changes colors with her insulin levels, letting her know when she needs a shot. Some people have implants tied to a small tablet (called a tile) for all their communication stuff and more.There are several flashbacks sprinkled through out the story. It did take me a while to realize that they were flashbacks. I know I should have picked up on that sooner, I just thought this flashback character had some fascination with the 1990s. Anyway, the flashback storyline turns out to be very important for our main characters and over all, I liked it. All told, 4.5/5 stars.How We Found You reviewThis was a pretty good sequel though if you picked it up without Book 1, you could read it as a standalone.Kate (aka Kirsten) is raising her two kids (Silver & Mally) with her brother Seth and their very good friend Keke. She knows that Mally is special and she has her guesses as to why but she’s not sure what to do with it. Pretty soon, it becomes apparent that someone is after one or both of her kids and she has to unravel the mystery she walked away from 4 years ago in order to save them.Sometimes I loved Kate and sometimes she was tedious. Even though I understand why she’s stressed out and sometimes loses her temper and wits, I still wanted to give her a small slap to bring her back to reality. Freaking out isn’t going to keep anyone safe and it did create a few lags in the story. I still find Kate’s synethesia fascinating and so many of the side characters are great, including the new guy Zach.Keke is my true fascination. I want to be her side kick! So I was a little sad to see how limited her role was in this book. The plot is wrapped around a prophecy that has the kids caught up in it. I really enjoyed how this unfolded. 4.5/5 stars.What Have We Done reviewWow! What a mind trip! This tale opens several years after the ending of Book 2 but there’s plenty of things in this story that refer to earlier books in the series so it wouldn’t make a stand alone book. Mally and Silver are both nearly 16 and they have grown up in a very different world than their mother Kate (who is a self-imposed technosaur). For the first half of the book, we’re really just getting to know the tech of the day and catching up with the characters we’ve fallen in love with along the way.Keke is still my favorite character. She’s got a bigger role in this novel than she had in Book 2 (yay!). Marko, her friend with benefits/non-exclusive significant other, has run off to an ashram in India and Keke is a little heartsick over it, not knowing if he will ever return. Meanwhile, Seth (Kate’s twin brother) has stuck around to help raise the kids and he still has this torch burning for Keke. By the end of this book, I think he might be a great fit for her even if she’s still pining for Marko. Kate herself is trying to be a good mom but two rebellious kids in a world filled with tech that Kate doesn’t fully understand makes things difficult. Zack has been doing hard time at SkyRest for all those pesky murders in Book 2.OK, so robots are everywhere and doing everything for humans in this near future South Africa. Some robots are strictly service bots with no AI and then there’s a whole range of AI in the more complex bots. Some bots have rights and some don’t. Like sexually harassing a lingerie bot is illegal but is only referred to as interference and doesn’t carry the same weight as such an act against a human. There’s those that are fighting for equal rights for the bots and there’s those that don’t want any rights for the bots.Then a few bots loose their crap and people die. Runawayrunawayrunaway! The ending gives us a big mindscrew. Yep. Oh my! I loved it because it means our heroes have to take a big leap. 4.5/5 stars.Narration reviewRoshina Ratnam is phenomenal with this series. I’m loving her narration and really appreciate the skill she brings to the table. This tale is set in a near future South Africa and there’s several African accents. I’m completely untutored in African languages but Ratnam was made it possible for me to hear the differences in the various accents (for example, Zulu and Nigerian). She also did a great job with Kate’s wildly swinging emotions (as needed), Seth’s fear & determination, Keke’s deep concern, and Marko’s intense fear. She had perfect little kid voices for Mally and Silver. 5/5 stars.I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. One day she meets a strange woman who tells her that she is not who she think she is, and that she was taken, and now they will be hunting her.The first book in the trilogy is a roller coaster of emotions and events, an action packed story of two very special people who don’t know who they are, but along the way of finding about themselves, they unearth an intricate clandestine operation of enormous proportions. This was a book that I couldn’t put down. The characters are wonderfully built, feeling like real people.Some of the things that hooked me were the intrigue and the tension, and guessing where the story was going to. We follow the two main characters that seem completely unrelated, and little by little the pieces start falling into place. Alternating with the main story are diary entries from several years before. Af first they are not explained nor the author of the entries revealed, but after a while one can start guessing who that person can be.After the evens in the previous book, Kate tries to rebuild her life with two toddlers and her twin Seth. She is having a very difficult time due to PSTD and constant paranoia. Her fears seem to ring true when someone tries to kidnap her son Mally.We find a different Kate than before, with more experience and more fears, but also unresolved issues. Lawrence has a very powerful way of transmitting the characters’ emotions, and this made easy to connect to them, especially Kate, even though our lives and circumstances are quite different. Her fear and anxiety are palpable through Lawrence’s words in a way that they become ours too. It’s amazing how little details help to bring the characters to life, and Lawrence is great at this. All characters are alive, even though we don’t know a lot about their background.There is a lot of action again in this book, and also dire situations that made me hurt for some of the characters. Some events made me think a lot, wondering what I’d do if I was in the same situation; and there was not an easy answer. Some images really stayed with me after finishing the book, and I already miss the characters in it. This series is my favorite so far this year.On the third book Kate lives a normalish life along her children, who are almost grownups now. Silver is a game junkie to the point that it worries Kate, and Mally has a robot girlfriend. One day, Silver doesn’t come back home, and it seems all machines are rebelling against humanity.This book goes into a quite different direction than the previous ones, but it was somehow expected since it picks up the story twelve years later. The world building is again amazing, with vivid descriptions and details that make me want to be there just to see it all. Cyberpunk is one of my favorite genres, but J.T. Lawrence takes it to the next level. There were many surprises in this book, which I found totally mind-blowing. It was one of those books that I couldn’t put down.It was a beautifully written trilogy, full with details but without overloading the reader and letting some things to the imagination. There is plenty of technology in the book, but it is just mentioned as a part of the world building. The series feels part dystopia, part cyberpunk.Roshina Ratnam’s narration was simply beautiful. I could listen to her voice for hours on end. She brought the characters to life and delivered great and expressive character’s interpretations. One minor setback is that many of the characters sounded exactly the same, causing some of dialogs therefore confusing.I LOVED this series, and would recommend it not only to people into cyberpunk, but also to anyone who would like to read a good story with great characters. J.T. Lawrence has become one of my favorite authors, and I will read anything she decides to delight us with.I received a copy of this book in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author

Yu Dan is a Professor and Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Media at Beijing Normal University. Yu Dan scope for writing this book was because she wanted it to be practical for the people of China to immediately put to use. Anyone who even knows a little about modern China can tell you that Confucian practices were openly rejected and condemned by the parties, thinking that by rejecting it they would actually succeed of being 'advanced /modern.'Yu Dan does not dive into the academic approach of explaining Confucius, but rather the most simplistic way. You won't find how Confucianism came to be or how it shaped the history back then. All this book consists of is his teachings and she takes such with such clarity that even Confucius would have been proud of her. She does incorporate some of her own experiences and stories which better explain what Confucius is trying to say. Confucius took many roles during his time, but over her he only portrayed as a sage.In the book is composed of six themes philosophical concerns that complements each other and builds upon the previous chapters.1. I had limited knowledge of Confucius other than fortune cookies. I know have a limited but better knowledge of this great philosopher and his impact on our culture. Much of his thinking is mirrored in Christian thinking.

Confucius from the heart is a daily reference of the wisdom of China. Americans should read it to understand how Chinese think. Highly recommended.

this hardbound book is even more beautiful under its nice sleeve. I immediately became absorbed by it from page one. I like the author and his humility. so far in my readings, its an excellent book and depicts things very well.

Easy to read. But, someone will need to understand a little bit of Chinese culture as all of times there are direct transaction.
