Very good, and surprisingly scholarly and balanced work on the Bible. The book explains the pitfalls and pratfalls of reading the Bible, including paraphrasing, translation problems, version analysis and how to use notes and cross-references. The book discusses the elements of diverse authorship, the historical development of the canon, and the challenges and rewards of using the Bible as Scripture and as a source of belief. A good, well written, well researched book.

Good intro to Bible, but not a study guide. Recommend for those interested in a general book about the history of the bible before they delve into detailed study. I found it interesting. Not a children's book, okay for teens.

As a devout Episcopalian, staying up with the Church's Teaching is important to me. I was missing this volume in the 12-volume series. Thanks for the reasonable price.

The Episcopal church in the twentieth century took advantage of the general availability of publishing to good advantage, compiling through several auspices different collections and teaching series, the latest of which was only completed a few years ago. There have been 'unofficial' collections of teaching texts, such as the Anglican Studies Series by Morehouse press, put out in the 1980s, as well as an earlier teaching series. However, each generation approaches things anew; the New Church Teaching Series, published by Cowley Publications (a company operated as part of the ministry of the Society of St. John the Evangelist - SSJE - one of the religious/monastic communities in the Episcopal church, based in the Boston area) is the most recent series, and in its thirteen volumes, explores in depth and breadth the theology, history, liturgy, ethics, mission and more of the modern Anglican vision in America.The second volume, by Roger Ferlo, is entitled 'Opening the Bible', looks at the first of the Anglican triad of scripture, tradition and reason. So much of the liturgy, so much of the sensibility even of the general English language has been considerably influenced by the spirituality and linguistic construction of the English Bible. How we read the Bible today, in all of its various translations, hearkens back to Tyndale and Cranmer, as they were putting together early English translations of the biblical texts and the liturgical texts. Ferlo sets the stage by setting out the context of Richard Hooker's sense of how to read the Bible: recognising the community reading; recognising the community of origin of the texts; recognising the development history of the canonical Bible; and looking at the history of how the Bible has related to and been interpreted by the longer tradition of Christendom in the world.Ferlo looks at different aspects of reading the Bible, both practical and theoretical. Anglicans are used to reading the Bible for themselves in addition to having portions read aloud in services, and reciting together the psalms and other significant passages in the liturgy. Ferlo discusses everything from the relative merits of different translations of the biblical text and difficulties in translation and textual transmission to the advantages of various kinds of annotation and page layout. He includes a history of biblical development (manuscript and document transmission, division into chapters and verse, etc.), some connections to Jewish scripture (both Old Testament issues as well as midrashic and talmudic) and some of the finer distinctions between the reading of 'the Bible' and reading the Bible as 'scripture'.Anglicanism is sometimes accused of not taking the Bible seriously. Nothing could be further from the truth, as this text will indicate. The Anglican church requires no particular hermeneutical framework, nor any particular translation of the text to be used. However, this freedom is accompanied by the longer traditions of the church that give respect and authority to certain kinds of interpretation over others.Roger Ferlo was a professor of English at Yale University prior to becoming an Episcopal priest. He has been a Bible study leader and teacher in many parishes and dioceses, and brings the wealth of his experience to bear on this important topic in Anglicanism.Each of the texts is relatively short (only two of the volumes exceed 200 pages), the print and text of each easy to read, designed not for scholars but for the regular church-goer, but not condescending either - the authors operate on the assumption that the readers are genuinely interested in deepening their faith and practice. I almost didn't purchase this book because of some of the awful reviews I read. I questioned whether I wanted to waste my time and money on something that some reviewers claimed advocates child abuse. So I began with the free sample, was pleased and decided to purchase it. After reading this book in it's entirety I am absolutely shocked at some of the awful things people wrote about this author! Dobson's advice is far from abusive and I worry about a society so permissive that it would label it as such. He stresses the importance of protecting the spirit of the child while helping to control the will. He warns against discipline that is demeaning or done in anger. He gives advice for creating a home filled with love and how to discipline a difficult child while making it evident to the child that they are loved, special, and cared for. Dobson stresses the importance if finding a balance between a household that is too harsh and too permissive as both ends of the spectrum can be harmful to a child. He does advocate swatting a child on the behind one or two times for clear acts of defiance and only after other measures have failed. He writes that spankings should be rare, never done in anger, and always followed by holding the child and lovingly telling them what they did wrong and assuring them that they are loved. However, if you disagree with spanking this book can still be beneficial to you. It is filled with an abundance of helpful information, most of which has nothing to do with spanking. Read it and take away what is useful for your situation and toss what isn't. If you have a strong willed child then I think you'll find it very beneficial!

Great book to understand your children in general, even if your child is not particularly a strong-willed child. Personally I applied Dr. Dobson's advice to my 2 and half year old girl and so far I have seen positive changes and results. We became closer, and she now shows more affection as well as respect to her parents. Would recommend to other parents who have toddlers.

This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. If you are not a Christian you may not agree with or understand a good part of the book, but it is based on scripture. It can help anyone though!

This book makes me so angry. I wish I could give this 0 stars. Advocates spanking your child. I now have to figure out how to get rid of this awful book. Don’t buy this!!!

The "New Strong Willed Child" is like "The Art of War" for handling strong headed children. After I've read this book, I am prepared, like General McCarthy going into battle - to defeat my strong-willed child at every turn and turn him into a weak-willed noodle who will never question my authority. This book will teach you to subdue the willpower of your child - it is clear that many children feel entitled to their own thoughts and opinions which is just not right. These days, there are too many leaders and not enough followers, and this book is the bible for techniques to use to crush your child's dreams and spirit and turn them into a timid sheep.Only issue is that I had already implemented the techniques from the "Old" Strong Willed Child and I had to learn a completely new system, but I was able to learn it in no time.

Wish I could follow the advice in this book, without risking CPS removing the child from the home. I was raised this way and it was very effective, and I was a compliant child. This book was written in the 70's, or thereabout, I believe. Times have changed. If your child tells a teacher that spankings are going on in your home, they will send someone out to investigate, especially if your chid shows signs of disrespect and defiance. It is already obvious, that for whatever reason, you have a child that causes problems.

I had a high needs baby who is now a high needs toddler. He’s different from my older two children and is extremely strong willed. His tantrums are epic! Reading this helped me understand my little guy better and the suggestions on how to parent/discipline these kiddos is working. After 2 back surgeries 25 years ago and conic back pain, my Orthopod advised me to try Yoga to strengthen my core and correct posture...I am 75 and this book was a godsend...it explains the stretch prep and modifys almost all of the positions for a safe class..It has helped immensley...P S ..yoga for 6 weeks now, 3x's per week...

Though my Teacher Training is for the practice of VINYASA my training was more for those who are physically capable, it wasn't broken down for those just starting out or those who are limited and such… Thanks to my own injuries, this book allowed me to do a slower practice breaking asanas down and use of props.. This is a great book to teach us to modify and still be able to do yoga. For anyone, you don't have to be 50, but then again I know many 50 year olds who are more than capable to practice in advance sequences without modifcations due to YOGA….

I suppose it's my fault, what I really needed was 'yoga for 70+' to help me with the Gentle Yoga class I teach.This book doesn't really address the age-related concerns I run into with my older students, like how to work around hip replacements and osteoporosis, what to substitute for inversions when a student has glaucoma, etc. But, like I said, my students are well over age 50 (I'm nearly 50 myself) so it's my fault for expecting too much.The poses and prop variations it teaches are what I use in all my classes for less-flexible students of all ages. From that perspective, though, it's a fine book with clear instruction & illustration.

Most of this book is descriptions of how to position yourself for the poses, which are difficult to follow if you've never done or seen or have had Yoga explained to you. I have the Kindle version, and find it very hard to flip back and forth on the pages in order to check and see if I'm doing the poses right.Very poor descriptions of how to put the poses together into a workout routing.

Excellent yoga stretching poses and techinques for someone starting out or want to maintain a yoga regimen at home. Great photos exhibiting the poses and how to do them. I highly recommend the book for anyone trying to include yoga streching exercises into their exercise routine or as a enhancer to a yoga class.

Need to use a reference book, it is OK.
